I would "read" more by listening to audio books, but I am unaware of a platform with reasonable prices for books in my range. I've also been experimenting with AI text-to-speech, and I'm pretty impressed with the results. I am wondering, does SN buy audiobooks? What platform do you use if yes? Would you listen to audio books if they were cheaper? If enough stackers say they would buy audio books if they were cheaper, I am thinking about hacking together a website to stream audio books (for a few open domain books).

It depends, but I find 5000 sats fair enough for most short to medium audiobooks. If it's a long one, or if it's exceptionally well-produced (human reader, sound effects, and so on) I'd be more inclined to pay for more.

Average price is 14.99 for one so 10k sats seems fair especially if it's 10+ hours. GOT, first book is like 34 hours for the audiobook. So 14.99$ seems like a bargain for that much entertainment. 15K sats for that kind of book.

I listen audio books because I cannot read very well. My eyes couldn't resist too long reading a lot of text.
But I enjoy audio books, it helps me to sleep and relax me. I wouldn't use a streaming service of audio books. Why? Because I do not want to be connected when I read/listen books. And I mostly listen them when I am away from home, in the wilderness. So I prefer to download the audio file on a small device and listen it.
How much to pay for an audio book? I don't know, but this is the wrong question. Usually the one that create the content is the one that make the price. If the price is not correct, the market will adjust it.
So who is going to make those audio books must do their math:
  • how much time they will dedicate to record that audio book
  • how much they paid for the hardcopy book
  • how much they paid for rights to distribute the audio book
  • how much they paid for the audio recording equipment and in how much time they want to have ROI
Price for something start with the start of production not with how much a customer will pay. I will tell you how much a customer will pay: ZERO if is possible.

And where do you download these audio books?

Books are superior, in my opinion, especially if you have a Kindle.
  • I can read at my pace, easily reread paragraphs I find difficult (I am not a native English speaker but I read exclusively in English) or pause to ponder or discuss.
  • Kindle allows me to bookmark and highlight passages that I find particularly interesting or memorable.
  • While reading, I can set the mood with music of my choice or stay connected to the world.
I don't like audiobooks, it's a no from Fabs.

I wouldn't. I prefer to read books. If I listen to something - it's podcast, in this case I'm ready to pay with my time and attention when I listen to it

Cant see zero in the options...
