The US gets a point for a cancelled game? That's very odd. That must be unique to cricket. I can't think of any other sport that rewards you for not playing.
It's not unique to Cricket. In many other sports, if it's a washout or the match can't be completed then both teams share equal points.
It also happens in Hockey, Football and other such sports.

When you say hockey, it's what North Americans think of as field hockey?

Oh well. They don't do that in North American sports. If the game matters to the standings it will be played some how, some way.
