Tape delay on the east coast too. I believe the game was played in the afternoon, then televised during prime time.

I think youโ€™re right. 5 pm EST was the actual game. 8 pm EST was on television

That's wild. The game was over and everyone was partying in Lake Placid while the rest of the country watched the game.

I lived with a bunch of friends at the time. We all stayed away from tv and radios that day. Then one of our idiot buddies came running in when the puck dropped on the tape delay and spilled the beans.

This was quite common in USA. NBA finals were famous for being tape delayed.
We see it with the Olympics. Or will see it in prime time later this month in Paris
But most people will know the results because they can stream it live
