I had no idea SN was already discussing higher posting/comment fees two years ago. For the newer folks, it used to just be 1 sat to post anything.

It’s amazing to see how the Bitcoin adoption has been growing in African countries. There was only one initiative I knew of in 2020, when I visited Zimbabwe and Botswana. That was the Satoshicentre in Gaborone founded by Alakanani Itireleng. Together we organized a meetup at the university, where I held a Bitcoin talk. Now there are communities like the Bitcoin Cowries in Ghana, Bitcoin Dada in Kenya, Bitcoin for Fairness in Zambia, Bitcoin Ekasi and Bitcoin Ubuntu in South Africa and the new Bitcoin Innovation Hub in Uganda. In the next few years we’ll see tremendous growth. Exciting!

I think raising posting/comment fees to reduce bad content is reasonable. 10 sats seems like a good starting point.
A cool side-effect is that by raising posting and comment fees, Stacker News will also have far more sats to give back to the best us […]

lol, I get these notifications so often because I was so active exactly 2 and 1 years ago.
I can recommend reading the
Are You a Bitcoin Advocate or a Underground Bitcoiner
post again. IMO it's an important topic that is very underdiscussed explicitly but it is the undercurrent in many other discussions about Bitcoin. I'm pretty proud of the post

Maybe that would be a nice Golden Oldie for @siggy47 to consider.

I can’t wait until we get to the Anita Satsraiser day. I am gonna zap like it’s 2023.
reply
That's what I thought this was for a second.

What a great post about Africa! Thanks man! Must say I'm learning at greater pace with these old posts.
reply
That's why I wanted to do this. There's been so much excellent stuff written and shared here. It would be a shame for it to just be lost forever.
reply
I'm following the 2022 timeline since it's closest to when I started using SN, forgot about when everything was 1 sat to post.
How has it been two years already..
reply
That's not when they changed it. I wasn't here yet and I remember everything being one sat for a while.
I don't think they raised it until around the time territories came out.
reply
Wow, I thought it changed much sooner. I had to find it, of course. #313522

Happy days!

I prefer the juicier rewards we get now.
reply
I agree, it makes more sense like this.
reply
I'd like to see them do something similar with comment fees, but I think we should get to set that when we make a post. Maybe the territory owners should also be able to raise them.
reply
I understand the concept and that it will bring in more revenue and better comments. However, I'm also concerned that it might lead to less overall activity in the comments section. Given the current state of the SN, I'm not entirely sure if this is the right approach. We'll just have to experiment to find out.
reply
I agree. Right now, the OP doesn't get any direct benefit from comments, other than the joy of conversation.
If there were some sort of fee split that included the OP, then they should have an incentive to keep prices low enough that they get comments.
reply
Good idea, I think it was fair for the OP to receive a small percentage of the zaps in the comments.
