incentives to earn are obvious. but what is the incentive to upvote various things?
postsposts
upvoting posts will make the post more visible to others. so you would upvote a post if you want to promote something.
how often do you want to promote something?
commentscomments
i could see myself mainly upvoting comments that are unpopular, but that i agree with. this is basically a way to flex an opinion on the site and make your position known / more acceptable.
general upvotinggeneral upvoting
upvoting content that you like would theoretically help to tailor this website to have more content that you personally like. so by upvoting content, you're increasing the enjoyment that you get out of the app

upvotes naturally have a positive moderation quality. so you want your users to upvote good content. but the main person benefitting from this positive moderation is the owner of this website.
what if there was some kind of system where if you upvote something and a lot of others also interact with it, then you get some kind of kickback? it would be sort of like investing in content and seeing a return on it. maybe too complex though.
I like that idea. It’s like your votes are kind of bets, and if the post is liked by other people too you win. But and it’s a big but you’d likely just end up with a Keynesian Beauty Contest. It might be better than the alternative though.
Very true. It would just end up encouraging more of a hive mind.
I was initially thinking that tying upvotes to sats would make people more stingy with their upvotes across the board. That's why I was thinking "how do we encourage people to upvote" like what is the incentive to not just hodl them haha
Rather than a hive mind, I think it incentivizes upvoting for the lowest common denominating content - memes, dunking on people, etc - because people know that stuff “wins.”
The fact that it costs someone to upvote is tricky - you brought up an interesting point.
Someone else suggested it work like a lottery and participation on the site enters you in the lottery and if you win you get all the Sybil fees.
So to encourage upvoting, maybe you can only enter the lottery if you spent X sats in the last week? Something like that?
I'm not sure how the Sybil fees thing works tbh. Is that explained somewhere?
Yes exactly like that. Weekly or daily.
By Sybil fees I mean the sats it costs to post and comment.
