To start with, I know we can hover over the number of sats zapped to get the number of stackers, at least on desktop. I have yet to figure out how to do it on mobile, but that's another issue.
This morning I was preparing my ~bitcoinbeginners newsletter, and for some reason I was focused on the number of stackers who were zapping top posts. I started thinking that I would really appreciate having that information available when scrolling new SN posts myself. I know from experience that good posts often get ignored, and I think that having that information readily visible would be valuable. It would be an information point akin to number of comments.
It may seem like a minor point, but it seems to me that it would be simple to implement.
Another benefit would be to further inhibit Sybil blasting. A new stacker with a gigantic number of sats on a post with one zapper would be quickly exposed.
Wow, that's great. I am also curious to know this. But right now I am using my mobile phone.

When will this be possible through mobile?

I don't know

I am at stackers news only from mobile. I haven't run it on my computer yet. But now I will probably go because I am very interested in knowing this.

I wonder what percentage of stackers use mobile versus desktop?Obviously there are a lot of stackers like you.

Yes agree.

That'd be amazing! When we can look at the number of people who zapped, we can know the popularity. With the zap amount we only see how big is the post zapped.
But, If I say that we can already understand this by looking at the top posts for the day. I've seen that some top posts don't have too much sats. While some posts with big amount of sats is well below those posts.
So, I'm ok with or without it.
reply
You're right. Number of stackers is a factor in determining zaprank, among other factors. It's also true that you can hover on desktop, but not mobile, to see sats
reply
I'd love this at least as an option. Seeing 10K sats on a post tells me that the stacker's making some bank, not that it's a great post. Seeing that 15 people have zapped it tells me that there's community consensus that it's worth reading (and yes, the algorithm should help here, but I also like raw data).
Comments are also useful, but they're not quite the same thing. Seeing fifteen comments on a post tells me it's creating a discussion or debate, but a post can be worthwhile or useful without that.

You explained what I was thinking better than me... again. It's really getting annoying. πŸ˜€

Yes, I agree. It would surely be a sybil buster.

My main opposition to this is visual clutter. That's why we do the hover. The hover isn't great though so maybe the right approach is to do something better than the hover.
reply
I figured that. I know clutter is an important issue. I dont think it would take up much space, but you have a better sense of what would affect user's eyeballs. Also, is there a way to get # of zappers on mobile?

No way to see it on mobile currently.
The hard thing with clutter is that veteran stackers will have more tolerance for clutter than new stackers.

*We can figure out a way to show it on mobile though
reply
That would be great! I never knew you can see who zapped what πŸ˜‚
reply
Maybe make it optional in settings? Maybe with the options being the current one, or one where # of zaps is what we see, and hovering shows the amount? Or maybe something that clicking rotates through (similar to the price of btc at the top of a page)?
reply
How about letting Stackers choose to display either the number of Stackers or the zaps?
I think allowing the number of Stackers as an option can shift us away from the prevailing mindset that zaps are the only/main criterion of a quality post.
We can do a A-B version for a week or two, the same way Google does: Google rely upon A-B testing. They release two versions of the software at the same time and receive quick feedback on what approach is more successful. I don’t mind volunteering to have just the number of Stackers displayed on my posts; I suspect it might mean more to me.

I don't use mobile, but I think it's a good idea. It should take them 10 minutes to implement this.
reply
I use mostly mobile for SN
reply
Seems intelligent. I just figured out how to do the hovering today! I remember it was in a previous post, but I could never get it to work.
reply
I should have included that point too. Many stackers aren't even aware that you have access to that info
reply
Is the information really that helpful, though? I feel like I participate on good posts, but those posts are generally made by the same people.
reply
I like how you and @Undisciplined and @grayruby are always exploring ways to make things better on SN
reply
Wow, I didn't know this was a thing! I'm a mobile user as well, so I'm definitely interested. Thanks for mentioning it.
reply
Yes, do it Zappers counter is more informative than zaps amount
reply
Should be an easy enough addition to add beside the number of sats and comments. I am ok with the hovering because I usually use my laptop but you are right about mobile, I don't think there is a way to know.
In terms of the Sybil blasting point. I think we need to be careful making assumptions. I often zap 1k sats on a really awesome or creative post. For instance, that little baseball story Herschel posted in the sports territory yesterday. I zapped that 1k sats and was the only one to zap for awhile. I often zap the pool posts 1k sats to juice the pot. So, I don't think it is always something untoward occurring but I do think it could help us identify repeat offenders. If it is happening over and over to the same poster then probably they are zapsturbating.
reply
I do the same type zapping. That is something to consider. I see it as only another data point. The first indication should obviously be the quality of the post.
I was thinking more about the admittedly rare posts with 50-100k sats and 1 zapper. Usually these are new stackers looking to game the system.
reply
That's a gamble too though because if you zap 50k sats to your own post you are paying 5k in fees. There is no guarantee you will get 5k more zaps to that post or 5k in rewards for being in the top 10. So people may try it and it is good to be on the look out for but I don't think it will be common.
reply
True. SN has put up barriers. The main reason I would like to have the info is not Sybil related. It's just another way to quickly find posts that haven't been zapped many sats, but which could be worthwhile. I use # of comments for that too. I know zaprank takes that into consideration, but it's just one of the many ingredients of the magic sauce.
I thought this was going to be about people who zap posts without checking how many other zappers there were.
