Hello SN! I need to tell you something!
I am single and happy. I don’t earn enough to afford a big house right now, but I am happy. I'm 24, a post-graduate in English Literature. I don’t want to get married now, and I am happy. I don’t like socialising. I am a loner. But I am happy. I am not from a top B-School/Engineering college/ Medical school and neither in government service nor a CA/CFA, and yet I am doing good. Not to forget I AM HAPPY.
Society, you suck at times. Stop advising. Live and let live.
I get many toxic pieces of advice from the so called social racoons. The most toxic one is about getting married and getting settled in life.
Today, a relative visited my parents at tea and abruptly asked about the plans of me getting married. I would have buried him, if we don't follow the tradition 'Atithi devo bhava'.
He stretched it to my not even doing a job and staying at home all the time. At this, I couldn't hold on my patience and replied, "Who can work 8 hours for as low as 7000 Rupees? How can a man survive on so less a salary?"
Having waited for a moment he asked, "So, Do you have some other plans? Are you preparing for a government job exam or something else?"
This wasn't a question, it was just another toxic advice that I often hear Indian people giving to the kids and young people. Damn, in India government jobs are worshipped for the reason of giving a financially secured life.
"I can't come in terms with the idea of a job. I'll do my own business and I'll go on to become a financially free person in some years from now", I replied him collecting all my confidence.
That man laughed at me with scorn and said, "Where will you get money to start a business?"
I countered with sheer force, "I stack sats. I invest low amounts in Bitcoin. I do some hydroponic farming."
"What! Don't you know that it's illegal in India. The police may catch you for Bitcoin thing. It's just an online scam", the man went on to say a lot of other things until my father who is the coolest man in my town told the man to cut the nonsense and enjoy some snacks.
While he was going back, I overheard my father telling the man, *'Bitcoin is not a crime, I've talked to the people who know about finance and money. Nobody told me that it's a crime. The next time you just don't discourage anyone for the innovative things. Bitcoin doesn't kill anyone. It's just like money."
After the misinformed and ridiculous man is gone, my father asked me not to be disturbed by the comments from the mad man. Just keep on doing what you're doing. I'm with you.

Haha! 😂 In our towns and villages people like to live misinformed. You should just ignore such people. I just can't get what did upset you the most?

As you go through life people will tell you all sort of things. Some of the things you will accept as good advice and some of the things you will think of as being not so good. But one of the ways to learn a lot about yourself is to think deeply about why these topics got you worked up to the point of wanting to “bury” you fathers friend. If you disagree fine, simply move on or have a conversation and tell him why you disagree. If you are getting upset about these things there is a great learning opportunity somewhere if you think deeply enough about these topics.

If you are getting upset. My intention to write about this incident wasn't about only showing that I was upset. Instead, I was so glad to see my father's reaction and how he handled all of that.
TBH, This is just common in India. You may find every other older man and woman suggesting youngers on issues they know nothing about. To the question if I was upset. Yes, when he attached Bitcoin to Criminals!
reply
Why does that upset you if you know it isn’t true? Why couldn’t you calmly state the facts and reasons supporting your view? That’s the question you need to ask yourself.

I think you should have informed the misinformed that Indian government collects a hefty 31% Bitcoin's and shitcoin's profit in terms of fiat value!
If there are no rules, how do they collect taxes?

How did you find your way onto StackerNews?

I'll join the chorus. You have a great dad. Relative or not, that person was rude and you handled it well. My friends who served in the armed forces love the saying: "If I wanted your opinion, I would have beaten it out of you."
reply
Thanks @siggy47! My dad is a pure gold in when it comes to remaining cool!
Yes, he was rude but It's kind of abundant in Indian ways. People who are elder have a tendency to ask and suggest younger people without being asked for. I'm okay when someone who is well informed puts forward his views, bitter or sweet whatever! I won't mind. But when someone goes on making claims and suggestions with little research behind it, I just can't tolerate such stupid people no matter how much older they are.

Yeah, I'm with you on the job-part, if it simply doesn't make - enough - economical sense, then why would I settle for some mediocre full-time job? Why would I literally waste those hours doing things I hate?
I work to live, not the other way around; if I need money, I'll bite the bullet for a few months and go back to doing my own thing again, with the daily bullet poins currently being: working out, going on lots of walks, and taking care of my grandparents- I love it.
I'm also strongly convinced that Bitcoin will greatly improve my overall purchasing power in the coming decade, further motivating me to do as I please, and not give in to societal pressure.

It was actually my father who denied me to do the job. He also told me make strides in something else. He funnily remarked that he hadn't done anything by doing a job all his life. My mother was rather insisting on me doing a job but when I told her that I've started writing on SN where I can earn much more than 70-80 dollars. Then, She told me that she only wanted me to work to build career.

Hm, I'm not surprised, my father also kinda lets me do my own thing, whereas my mother and sister push every once in a while for a stable job, whatever it may be; Men embrace risk, women don't. 😉
reply
Fabs........... I said it before and I'll say it again. You need to meet more women. I assure you a hell of a lot of women embrace risk. Maybe the percentage is smaller, but the percentage is still high.
Although..... childbirth is risky...... yeah, so many of us embrace risk. You need to meet more women.
reply
Yeah what the fuck? This isn't about "women", but about both of us doing our own thing work-wise...
Is that all you have to say around here? Anything in defense for Women?!
It's a fact, not fantasy, that men are more willing to embrace risk, be it in investments or work.
Cut the crap already, parrot.
reply
Cool. Well. Women embrace risk. Damn right I'll say it. Should I call you a name since you called me one?
..... nah

What's your obsession with me?
Ever since that post I feel like you're following me around here, get some other topics to talk about or leave me alone, for the constant "muh but females are strong and embrace risk too!" yada yada ain't gonna cut it.
But I would! I've made a l promise to me that I won't marry until I become a wholecoiner!

I'm from India.

... On your "wholecoiner-journey"... 😅
Your dad sounds like a good guy. DId he understand bitcoin before all of the others?
reply
Yes, my dad came closer to it last year only when my cousin who works in Germany suggested him to invest in Bitcoin. My father has been investing in shares and commodities all through his life. But, he couldn't see huge success because he had to face a lot of other monetary difficulties. Whenever, he made a good benifit in his investment, some difficulty had come by and he just couldn't redouble his money. By profession, my father is an accountant.
