Hello SN! I need to tell you something!
I am single and happy. I don’t earn enough to afford a big house right now, but I am happy. I'm 24, a post-graduate in English Literature. I don’t want to get married now, and I am happy. I don’t like socialising. I am a loner. But I am happy. I am not from a top B-School/Engineering college/ Medical school and neither in government service nor a CA/CFA, and yet I am doing good. Not to forget I AM HAPPY.
Society, you suck at times. Stop advising. Live and let live.
I get many toxic pieces of advice from the so called social racoons. The most toxic one is about getting married and getting settled in life.
Today, a relative visited my parents at tea and abruptly asked about the plans of me getting married. I would have buried him, if we don't follow the tradition 'Atithi devo bhava'.
He stretched it to my not even doing a job and staying at home all the time. At this, I couldn't hold on my patience and replied, "Who can work 8 hours for as low as 7000 Rupees? How can a man survive on so less a salary?"
Having waited for a moment he asked, "So, Do you have some other plans? Are you preparing for a government job exam or something else?"
This wasn't a question, it was just another toxic advice that I often hear Indian people giving to the kids and young people. Damn, in India government jobs are worshipped for the reason of giving a financially secured life.
"I can't come in terms with the idea of a job. I'll do my own business and I'll go on to become a financially free person in some years from now", I replied him collecting all my confidence.
That man laughed at me with scorn and said, "Where will you get money to start a business?"
I countered with sheer force, "I stack sats. I invest low amounts in Bitcoin. I do some hydroponic farming."
"What! Don't you know that it's illegal in India. The police may catch you for Bitcoin thing. It's just an online scam", the man went on to say a lot of other things until my father who is the coolest man in my town told the man to cut the nonsense and enjoy some snacks.
While he was going back, I overheard my father telling the man, *'Bitcoin is not a crime, I've talked to the people who know about finance and money. Nobody told me that it's a crime. The next time you just don't discourage anyone for the innovative things. Bitcoin doesn't kill anyone. It's just like money."
After the misinformed and ridiculous man is gone, my father asked me not to be disturbed by the comments from the mad man. Just keep on doing what you're doing. I'm with you.
