It's Saturday, thus it is poll day!
My daughter is turning 6 soon and I told her once she is 6 she can start training in martial arts. Likely she will start with taekwondo because that's the discipline her brother practices and we are very happy with the school/master where my son takes classes.
Eventually I would like her to take some BJJ classes but the local school doesn't offer them to kids under 8. I was also thinking Judo might be a good option.
What do you think are the best martial arts for young kids to learn?

Karate and Judo are best until she's 10.

I'm not sure it makes a ton of difference for really young kids, because so much of it is learning how to fall and roll in most martial arts. I like the idea of Judo, because it leans into that and because it is almost entirely defensive.
I've been helping my daughter with her "ninja moves", recently. That's been fun.

I am supposed to do some ninja skills training today and also attend the chicks birthday party. Apparently I am not dressed appropriately though because Izzy told me "you are going to need to change".

I believe karate is good for her.

Yes, Karate is always good for kids. I took Karate when I was young.

My son is also about to turn 5 years old. I am also thinking of teaching him karate.

I'd imagine Judo is better for a young one. Opportune time to learn balance-based martial arts without as much risk of injury.
reply
Judo is good also if she wants to get into BJJ later as it will help with grappling.

Yep, it's relatively compatible. When I trained BJJ, we spent a few weeks of the year doing takedowns most of which were Judo-based.
reply
Nice. How long did you train BJJ for?

Only 18 months 2-3 days/week. I'd still do it if I could stop myself from obsessing about it to the detriment of other things or if I found it more natural so maybe I wouldn't need to obsess about it. I saw an appreciable difference going from 2 days/week to 3 days/week, so I'd recommend a minimum of 3 days/week.
It's a great sport on a number of levels. Met one my best friends training. He got his brown belt last year.

My best friend has been doing BJJ for years. I used to take kickboxing lessons with him and he moved on to BJJ. He has competed a couple times at tournaments. He loves it. I think he is also a brown belt. He hopes to get to black belt eventually but is only training a couple times a week so it will take some time.

One of my favorite things about BJJ is how long the road to mastery is and how viscerally obvious it is when you aren't a master. It weeds out high time preference people fast.

My wife trained in Krav Maga for years. She will be able to show my little one some stuff.

All are best for kids. But, this is the best order for learning martial arts for a kid.
#1 Judo. ‍#2 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) #3 Karate. #4 Taekwondo. #5 Wrestling.
Please go in this order.

Starting with Karate can be a great choice i think. It teaches kids to focus, discipline, respect, and self-control, which are important at a young age. It also improves coordination, balance, and physical fitness, while building confidence. I am also thinking about karate session for my daughter too once she turns 5.

I took Karate as a child. It was great.

Boxing is my favorite thing to watch on the weekends! Going with a few friends to the local dive, betting $20 on who we think will win and having great converations.

Do you watch MMA as well?
reply
I think they all have their strengths, but exposure and the lessons learned are probably more important at this age than picking the "right one", until they show it's something they love or are a natrual at.
