Bitcoin Island PH map shows about 70 businesses that accept bitcoin.
Since the last update we have also added 40 e-trike drivers (main public transportation here) and about 15 tiny stores and vendors. About half need to be added to this map.
The locals are starting to see the legitimacy of bitcoin through seeing it accepted more places.
Every on-boarding includes showing how remittances can be sent and received with negligible fees. Some locals are now coming to the office to cash in with fiat to send to others.
Gaining legitimacy and acceptance takes time. They may not be stacking sats on hardware wallets but they are understanding the utility of Bitcoin.
The number one thing you can do is book a vacation here and spend some Sat's.
BitcoinIsland@pouch.ph can help you arrange.
Great work! Looks beautiful from the pic on the site. What is the covid policy there? Do tourists still need a vax pass or quarantine time?

I have not left the island in months, but I think once you get in the Philippines the hurdles are over.
On the ground on the island, you see 95% of the population with masks with them but not necessarily being worn properly until you are in a high density area. In the high density area there is a gentle reminder to wear the mask at most.

From skimming that link, looks like they’re also getting in on the quarantine hotel scam. I get weirded out by the use of masks outside, I’ve seen that in a few LatinAm countries. Signals is sort of complacency that I’m not comfortable with, having said that many were complacent in EU and aren’t wearing masks outside. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Keep up the good work, I’d like to visit on day.

This looks great. My only concern is the government of the Philippines. Marcos' son is president, and Duterte's daughter is Vice President. Can anyone provide insight regarding the current political climate?

As an expat, the national politics are pretty invisible to me and do not seem to affect daily life in any meaningful way.

That's good to know. Do you live on "Bitcoin Island"?
reply
Yes, I am the lead on the ground for the Bitcoin Island team.
