"Upon the arrival of LNDK in March 2023, a tool spearheaded by Carla Kirk-Cohen and developed in conjunction with the Spiral team, our interest in BOLT 12 was rekindled. Described as "An experimental attempt at using LDK to implement BOLT 12 features for LND”, it essentially plugs into LND's existing APIs, enabling use of LDK’s built-in BOLT 12 support with LND."
Interesting to see that they don't need CLN for bolt12 now.
I also saw that they're using onion message routing. Why would they do this as a custodial LN wallet?
Is a nice news, with more wallet using bol12 standard, Improve compatibility, privacy and censorship resistance. I am a Phoenix user and it is a great improvement that more lightning services should incorporate.

Because that’s how LN works

What about clearnet?

You are confusing normal internet traffic (clearnet or Tor) with LN traffic (routing). Please watch this short video by Rene Pickhardt explaining how onion routing works in LN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=toarjBSPFqI

The concept of routing onion messages is not limited to Tor. Tor only made it popular. LN uses onion message routing for payments.
All it means is that you encrypt a message multiple times; once for every hop.
