The Chase for 50/50
Last week, I placed a small bet on greatness. I was perusing through Fan Duel's lines looking for ways to exploit their freebies and bonuses in my pursuit of being the the MSTR of sports degen gambling. I saw they had some Shohei Ohtani specific lines. One that piqued my interest was Will Shohei Ohtani achieve 50/50?(meaning 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season). No player has ever accomplished this before. In fact, once Ohtani reached 43/43 he had done something no player had ever accomplished before, but we humans like round numbers so no one cares about a record of 43/43.
I believe Ohtani was at 46 homers and 45 SB with 19 games to go at the time of my bet. Currently he is at 48 homers and 49 stolen bases with 10 games to go. So, my bet is looking pretty good. It was only 5 dollars but if I win, a few more dollars to go into my winnings stash to sweep into bitcoin. Take that Fan Duel.
But besides the bet. What an incredible athlete? On route to 50 homers and 50 stolen bases, coming off of major elbow surgery that didn't permit him to pitch this entire year and still running away with the NL MVP award race.
If he stays healthy, I can't even imagine what his year will look like next year when he is back in the starting rotation again. Just a pleasure to watch his greatness. Even though I wish he had signed with the Jays and am still a bit bitter he didn't.
Sats for all, GR
A much better record than when Jameis became the first member of the 30/30 club.

30 TDs is good. 30 INTs not so much.

They’re both very exciting though.

So it’s now the 51/51 club. Since he went 6-6, 3HRs, 2SBs, 10RBIs. Forget Ichiro, that may be the best single game line ever.
And then of course next year he’ll be throwing 100 mph every 5 days.
I don’t think anyone, including his bookie, truly know what his potential is.
reply
It’s incredible. I can’t wait to see what kind of year he puts up next year when he is also pitching every 5th day.
reply
He is a very good player. Another Ichiro.
reply
Ichiro is a legend. Ohtani is better than Ichiro.
If he stays healthy (big if) and can continue to pitch and hit for many more years he will likely be known as the greatest player ever.
reply
Ohtani is a bigger deal. Look at the ratings on television. Non baseball fans want to see him.
reply
Its not about him being a bigger deal or better. He is number 1 for other reasons. He broke the Japanese barrier that was set for the longest time in American baseball.
reply
Dodgers opened their season playing the Padres in South Korea.
I think they played 2 games in March. Shohei was the main reason.
reply
There were other players from Japan before him. I forget who but I know he wasn’t the first
reply
Ichiro came to MLB fairly late in his career compared to other guys. He was amazing but not on Ohtani level.
reply
Time will tell.
reply
I havent really watched baseball enough to know who is better. I just know Ichiro is famous. There was Kawasaki. And Ohtani. But Ichiro will forever be #1.
reply
I think Ohtani has surpassed Ichiro's popularity in both Japan and the rest of the world.
reply
Im sure he has. But when I was introduced to baseball, it was Ichiro. Ohtani may become the best, but he will never win as many gold gloves.
reply
Terrible comparison
Let me add another: he is another Godzilla, Hideki Matsui
reply
I wonder if they have a 50 goals in 50 games in hockey
reply
Can’t believe this guy is so good!
reply
Wow, that's impressive! If Othani keeps up his pace of play throughout his career, his path to the Hall of Fame is guaranteed!
reply
Definitely.
