Has our Nostr moment officially arrived?

We all know and love what Nostr stands for and what it means to the Bitcoin community. But that is only half the battle. Orange pilling friends and family is hard enough, so it's safe to assume that purple pilling will fall somewhere on the same scale. BUT - are we in the midst of our Nostr moment right now? Given the wide open and very public attack on free speech across the globe, when will people open their eyes and realize - this is not normal!

Telegram CEO arrested

Durov was recently released on bail, but TG has already bent the knee. It's safe to assume TG is no longer a viable solution for users to maintain privacy and exercise their right of free speech. TG has a lot of users around the globe - but will they assert their right to private and open communication?

Elon fought with one of Brazil's Supreme Court judges.. and lost. The attack on X in Brazil is a blatant attack on Brazilian's rights to challenge their leaders in an open and constructive manner. Who is next to fall in South America?

EU and UK right to assemble and protest under attack

If you've been paying attention at all to our friends on the other side of the pond (yes, I am American) there is a collective attack across the continent from many in the EU (and UK) to completely shut down their populations' ability to assemble, protest and stand up for their right to free speech.

So, where do we go from here?

Most, if not all, of this information is not news to those here on SN. However, the rest of the world seems to either (1) not care, or (2), and arguably worse, be completely unaware of what's going on.

When people say "Bitcoin fixes this" I tend to view that phrase as more of an aspirational phrase than a realistic phrase. While Bitcoin does theoretically fix a lot of the worlds problems, it's not an overnight kind of thing. However, Nostr actually does fix "this" (above) and much more, like tomorrow.

So, the question I pose to you all here on SN is simple - what do we need to do to inform those that not only need Nostr, but will likely only survive when the oppression really ramps up through Nostr.

Necessity is the mother of invention. This is a proverb that means when there is a need, people are likely to find or create new ways to do things.

There is a need, so is Nostr the inventive solution?

It seems like most (almost all that I've run across) bitcoin FOSS projects have their support in telegram.

For instance:

From everything I know, Telegram is not private enough and of course is not uncensorable.

Why are these bitcoin FOSS tools still not using Nostr? Does the right Nostr app just not exist right now, that could replace Telegram?

I think people care, but the primary value of those platforms is the number of people on those platforms and nostr can't compete on that front today.

Further, the value nostr provides over those platforms today is mostly intangible:

I can store my data in multiple places rather than one
I can use many different clients with different looks and feels and features
I can use a mechanism for sending/receiving money that's tied to my data

People will come to nostr when it produces a value that's:

tangible
can't be had elsewhere
doesn't require incredible network effects at the jump

Value is in the eye of the beholder… if we use the idea of value to be subjective to each persons unique situation, then I see it this way:

The desire to use a tool/solution/approach because it adds value relative to your incumbent solution and is voluntary and a low bar to switch is one thing.

The need to use a new tool relative to your incumbent solution due to necessity is another thing entirely.

The gap between these two approaches is very wide at the moment, and until they start to converge adoption will remain low, since we are still in the voluntary realm.

Once the paradigm begins to shift to the necessity realm - we will be ready.

I think it's time for Nostr 🟣 as they continue to attack freedom of speech, more and more people will migrate to Nostr to protect themselves from censorship, and not just Nostr but also all kinds of open source applications. For example, one day I noticed that Google Translate was censoring me when I was trying to express an opinion about the war between Russia and Ukraine. I tried several times and it wouldn't translate the text. Here at SN someone recommended me an application to download from F-droid called "Translate You" and since then I have been slowly switching to FOSS applications as I search and learn.

nostr is the solution to many of the issues, but right now the average person doesn't have a clue.

we need thought leaders in their respective spaces to take up nostr and then tell their fans etc to follow on nostr

Agreed. At what point does “the average person” become affected by all this overreach and oppression of rights? I think the same is for BTC to some extent; the average person does not need it, therefore they do not learn about it or pursue it.

If we wait for the average person to be meaningfully impacted we may be too late by then. I hope this is not the case, though.

it's a slow-boiling frogs situation i think, until it goes critical.

sadly, all it would take is some influencer to mention it or go there, and that would spark a ton of adoption.

like, if kim Kardashian became a free speech and btc maxi, millions would flood there.

of course, by their nature they are mostly a bunch of vapid fuckheads so don't have a need for any kind of censor-resistant platform

Currently, Nostr is more or less very niche ; with currently around 2M registered users, and probably 10% of this as daily active users, it has great potentials, and also many bugs ; an annoying issue with a bot spamming the relays.

The current web client (primal) is not optimal yet, it is slow, searches are missing, let's say it is not helping the adoption by people use to facebook or Twitter/X, yet ...

Yes, I think that the time has come!! I find the way of calling it the blue pill very peculiar... We as a community must show and teach the truth of what S.N or Nostr represent and the infinite usefulness it provides to your freedom of thought and communication!!
