Access to paid time off in the U.S. isn’t just tied to company policy, as factors like income, job role, and industry all affect access to sick leave and forms of personal time off.
A recent data release of workers with paid sick leave access by U.S. region reveals significant worker benefits disparities across the country.
This map of U.S. regions shows what percentage of workers have access to paid sick leave in 2024, using data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/ebs2.t06.htm#ncs_nb_table6.f.1).

I thought these figures were much lower. Here in Europe it's the state that pays, who pays in the US? Is it health insurance, the company or the state?

Usually it isnt a lot. Maybe 24 hrs? Then you have to use unpaid leave or pto.

But who pays?
Here in Portugal it's the state (all workers pay a monthly deduction of 11% for these situations and in case they become unemployed). The state pays for sick leave:
up to 3 days -> 0% from 30 to 90 days ->55% from 91 to 365 days ->70% more than 365 days -> 75%
