I believe this issue may have been raised by @grayruby before.

Last night I had the opportunity to talk up SN to a bunch of people. I tried to create an invite link, but it failed. I then used one of the older, unused invite links I had made. The link created an SN account, but did not give the invitee any of the sats I offered, nor did I get credit for a referral.

I assume this problem is related to the fact that I'm using an attached wallet?

oh, thanks, will look into it!

that they weren't credited with sats is related to attached wallets (we need to find a non-custodial solution for redeeming invites when referrer is offline, it only tries the custodial wallet currently) but the referral itself should have been credited

reply

I didn't get that orange notice I usually get. It's been about 12 hours. Are they sometimes delayed?

reply

is this related to your invite issue or is this a random question about zap errors?

they shouldn't be delayed that much, our invoices expire rather quickly, like within a few minutes

reply

I'm referring to the referral notice specifically.

reply

Ah, oh. Referral notices should be instant. If it's not, something went wrong. In this case here, I can tell you that if they weren't credited their invite gift because of missing sats in the custodial wallet, we will also not notify or credit you.

Invites and forwards are where non-custodial UX is definitely lacking and we'll have to find workarounds :/

"damn, @DarthCoin was right again"

reply

You don't have to point it out. He'll let us know in his own subtle way.

reply

I will just enjoy watching the 5th Nov chaos...

oh, thanks, will look into it!

will be fixed in next release

I mentioned some possible solutions for this here btw:

Options:
  • You need to pay for invite links in advance and then they get fee credits.
  • Inviter gets a notification which they can use to send them their gift.

However, this gift would become fee credits anyway if they don't have a wallet attached yet which is most likely the case if they just joined. The notification could also solve #1394.

Invite links somehow attach the wallet of the invitee with the gift as a budget via some NWC magic?!
reply

Is there an obvious way to pay sats for the invite link in advance? I don't recall seeing that option

reply

no there is not yet

reply

I have had the same issue

reply

Yes that was the issue I had as well.

reply

There is a way to give money other than zapping a post?
I always gave it to a referral through a zap lol

reply

You can create an invite link, load some sats on it, and text it to someone you want to introduce to SN. Check out referrals in your settings.
Don't use it for now if you have an attached wallet.

reply

Interesting.
I will give it a try next time.
