Why did the btc talk forum stop being the main hub for all things btc? i mean, i can see it's still alive and people are posting, but it seems the OGs left long ago and the action seems to now be on nostr
is this just because forums lost their popularity over a decade ago, a natural migration, or something else?

the action seems to now be on nostr
It is not. Nostr is only a sad copy of twatter, is not a place to have serious discussions. I was a member of Bitcointalk from 2012, but barely posting few things. The forum died after 2017.
I hope someday it will move to SN. SN is meant to be the replacement of Bitcointalk forum and r/Bitcoin. Once and for all.

I was on there the other day. There are some good threads and it's cool to read some of Satoshi's original posts but I hope we can migrate all of the quality content over here to SN. P2p eliminates all the low-value posts and I would much rather give/receive sats rather than merit.

Nostr is, in my opinion, a dumpster fire of low-quality posts. By making it 'free to use' with no measurable friction... it's all low-effort low-quality posts that are worthless to read (in my opinion).
I don't need to see a picture of someone's breakfast tagged 'good morning' for the one-millionth time. If it were 100 sats to post (about 9 cents) would that person still have posted?
When nostr adopts pay-to-post (P2P) i'll go back and take it seriously once again

Nostr will be cool when we can all paywall each other and set a price for our time and attention.
Until then, it seems to be nothing more than a vacuous see of spam and low-value posts.

100% agree unfortunately. Bitcoin is the preservation of time and value over the internet... and Stacker News is a great example of both while remaining fun and engaging.

100% this is it!

Imagine if SN was available in 2010-2017 era...

Jesus, that would be amazing. None of us would have ever been censored in r/bitcoin or constantly spammed on bitcoin twitter.
...and we would probably all be rich from zapping each other a million sats per post πŸ˜‚

zapping each other a million sats per post
are you fucking out of your mind? If I zap you now 10 sats ... this is generational wealth !

Bro, I used to attend a meetup back in like 2015 where I spent like .1 BTC for a couple beers at each event.
I would be zapping a shitload if bitcoin was still like $250 per coin.

i sometimes wonder if in , say ten years, i will tell my kids about all the generational wealth zapping that went down on SN

This will absolutely happen.
To your future children,
I just zapped your parent 21 sats for a single comment.
Sincerely, Jon in 2024

The bigger folder of meme templates you have, more funny memes you will have.

There’s a lot of deep technical discussion on Delving Bitcoin

Agreed. I get their weekly newsletter and its definitely full of high-value discussion.

Yes that is a very good place to read latest ideas and developments going on. I like also https://bitcoinops.org/ is like a resume of Delving :)

Also the Bitcoin Development Mailing list is here to view. Odd, but pragmatic, they chose Google. It was probably the easiest to setup.

unfortunately there's no place or is everywhere they can. The strong Bitcoin community that was before the "great fork" is not anymore so strong. is heavily divided.
Today we have these:

Didn't it get hacked? That plus cycles I think led to lulls in which a new venue saw growth into each next bubble. Reddit I think carried the torch at least during the blocksize war.

i mean, in the earlier web days forums were the thing for sure, before reddit. i used to spend hours a day on a forum for Russian language learners in the early 2000s, made real friends there, including a legit best friend that i later ended up working with in Moscow.
i miss those days in a way and i miss the connection, maybe the rise of reddit killed the velocity.
sn does give early forum type vibes though which is probably why i gravitate to it
reply
I mostly appreciated the basic algorithm of reverse chronological plus last bump time on forums but also liked things more compartmentalized. That did make it easier to forget about one though if you didn't need to visit it enough.
reply
i remember a sort of compulsion to visit every day, then again, i also visit SN every day. still, one thing for sure is that reddit has a very douche vibe to it, always has, in most of the subs.
reply
The people still on reddit are the ones who will tolerate the platform being locked down API-wise and all the subs taken over by admins. It was good for a time. Now it seems I need to go to like five places to get an overall sense of what's going on and like the forum days I don't mind it.
reply
You are on it.

I've personally seen people of Bitcoinforum moving to Reddit.
