I considered many options, but decided to keep it simple with a seed + passphrase combo.
Seed backup #1 in geographical location #1 Seed backup #2 in geographical location #2 Passphrase backup #1 in geographical location #3 Passphrase backup #2 is memorised
All physical backups are etched in stainless steel (the stamping / etching methods are cheap and also more durable than alternatives as demonstrated by Lopp).
Each physical backup has a tamper proof seal. There's also a label on the inside which says stuff like "do not share contents of device with strangers", "do not photograph contents", " do not enter contents into a keyboard", etc. Also there's things like the derivation path.
I wanted my setup to be secure, but also easily recoverable by beneficiaries in the event of my death.

This is very similar to my current setup. I have yet to make a seed backup for multiple locations, but I have a seed in a safe and a passphrase I've memorized. I need to create a backup elsewhere and a written down/etched backup of my passphrase too.

I have a similar backup just more passphrases (eggs & a single basket comes to mind).
Memorised the seed words & passphrases as an addition to the setup, the same goes for my OH. We both have a full access to our Bitcoin bank (I mean we own our bank) accounts 24/7, everywhere on the planet. No other bank is capable to offer these services, for near free.

Engrave the words on 1 inch stainless steel washers with a bolt thru them. Hide them somewhere. See here => https://www.econoalchemist.com/post/backup

I’ve seen this simple setup. Get a set of punches with alphabet & digits. Waterproof it.

Take a serious look at this. Executed properly, it is a secure offline storage option.

This is a project I’ve been really excited about. If they can get the grid inside a touch screen so you can scan a QR code then touch-type your pattern then it’ll be epic. I tweeted one of the creators and he said they are in talks with Spector wallet. Though, I think Spector is being bought out by Swan so things might be put on hold for a bit (that’s just a guess). Anyway, I’m excited to see this concept expand and other novel ideas like this.

Everyone should read this https://blog.lopp.net/how-to-back-up-a-seed-phrase/ by Jameson Lopp
TLDR:
  • seed splitting == bad (bruteforceable)
  • brain wallet == bad (bad entropy)
  • memorization as only backup == bad (for obvious reasons)
*25th word (or seed encryption) == bad (it essentially creates the equivalent of a 2of2 multi sig increasing the risk of loss of funds)
  • other methods of seed obfuscation == bad (no increase in security and increase chance of loss of funds)
  • just store the 12/24 words in the most unobfuscated way possible, in a durable offline medium and just worry about keeping that safe. Do as many copy backups as you can reasonably keep safe and need.
For me nothing beats safu.ninja for a single sig.

  1. Using TailsOS - here is a guide
  2. Memorize it in my brain. It's quite easy with some training.

Paper note "in my safe" + in my brain
Upcoming: Multisig. Will share keys with 2 trusted, unrelated ppl

A bit of all
Better to use passphrases & kept in separate locations.
Some smaller wallets I have written on paper in 2 different places
