I am a happy user of Obsidian (see my other tutorial), I use it as a really powerful markdown editor with great shortcuts for my TODOs, notes, planning, etc. I don't use the second-brain stuff, visualizations and similar features.
But the one thing I was always wishing for is that when I'm on my laptop browsing web, or doing something I would like to be able to just hit some shortcut and quickly add a note or a task in some default TODO list.
Today I finally figured out how to do it. And it's fairly simple.
TUTORIAL
- Install 2 extensions
- First configure Quick Add
- Open the Quick Add Settings, click on
Template
and change it toCapture
, fill in some name next to it (e.g. "Global task") and click onAdd Choice
. - Now click on the Gear icon next to the newly created "Capture"
- Now configure the details in Capture (documentation), for example to add a journal entry, see this example.
- Read the options in the dialog, it's quite self-explanatory and up to you. I'M NOT YOUR SUPERVISOR!
- Open the Quick Add Settings, click on
- Second configure Global Hotkeys
- Open the settings, search for
QuickAdd
and find the line with your "capture" (e.g. "QuickAdd: Global Task") and then select your global shortcut, e.g.Cmd+Shift+O
- Open the settings, search for
- That's it.
