Hey everyone, I’m Saba from Workit (https://workit.fitness). We created a gamified fitness app that pays you Bitcoin for staying active.
Workit is the perfect solution to onboard millions of mainstream users to Bitcoin Lightning. Built with LDK, it offers both custodial and self-custodial implementations (self-custodial not yet activated).
So far, we’ve onboarded more than 10K people from the mainstream audience, each with at least a balance of 20 sats in their keychain.
Think of Workit as a game—somewhat like STEPN, but better and without the Ponzi aspect.
Workit hosts multiple step challenges each month, where you can compete with others and win Bitcoin. Along with opportunities to earn FREE Bitcoin for walking and also exercising.
Ask me anything!
this territory is moderated
What role do you think more mainstream projects like WorkIt can play in spreading Bitcoin adoption?
reply
A pretty cool thing that has already happened is that some of our premium users, who primarily use the app for workouts wanted to play challenges and messaged us asking how to get more sats.
Some of them actually won challenges, and one even messaged me saying they looked up places where Bitcoin was accepted and bought coffee somewhere that accepted Lightning.
It’s possible to put Bitcoin in the hands of the mainstream audience and let them to actually use and spend it. However, for this to happen, overall adoption needs to grow.. at least in terms of the number of places accepting Lightning payments.
Another thing to note is that the mainstream audience is often confused about 'sats.' They’ve heard of Bitcoin, but 'sats' isn’t widely recognized. I’m considering switching to the sats symbol Bitkit proposed—it could make it much easier for everyone to understand what they’re earning. Or just using 'Bits' instead of 'sats'.
A lot of people have messaged us saying, "Hey, where’s the Bitcoin we were supposed to earn? The app just says 'sats'"
reply
That's awesome. That's what @Undisciplined and I are trying to do with stacker sports podcast. To try and drive interest in the Sports territory to those that might not necessarily be current bitcoin holders or users. We know once people use the site and start zapping and getting zapped they will stick around and learn more about bitcoin.
reply
That’s super cool! It’s a super hard to onboard the mainstream, but definitely possible!
It basically takes one WhatsApp-level Bitcoin app to get Bitcoin into the hands of millions!
reply
I should've written billions instead millions
reply
Peloton showed that bringing the social/competitive aspect into the product is key to explosion in user adoption
You guys have clearly been killing it on onboarding people as well with over 10K brought in
What's on the docket for the next 5 years in continuing to leverage the social layer of Bitcoin and exercise to take this project to the next level?
reply
There are many gamification opportunities to build some very cool things. To get there, we first need to succeed on a smaller scale, so maybe, as you said, in 4–5 years.
What I envision as potentially very exciting is Augmented Reality games based on fitness and general physical activity. Which can be pretty awesome
reply
What inspired you to gamify fitness and integrate Bitcoin rewards?
reply
I had an existing business in the fitness and health industry that was doing really well, and I saw an opportunity to build something that could gain traction.
At the time, I was also obsessed with Bitcoin and thought it would be a cool idea to combine Lightning and fitness.
It’s a great way to get moving, win Bitcoin, or stay disciplined.

Thank you for sharing your journey and inspiration behind Workit!
reply
Thank you for participating!
reply
Awesome of you to do this Saba. Really enjoy the app. Hopefully more stackers will join due to the AMA.
I would like to see more challenges added. Hopefully in the future.
reply
Thank you! I’d love to hear feedback from you guys about the challenges. It’s also possible for users to host challenges, which we hope to activate soon. This should introduce some variety!
If you have any specific type of a challenge (with goals and duration) I am all ears!
reply
I look forward to user created challenges.
reply
Yes, that’s pretty cool! We can even let someone from Stacker News create one. We’ll just need to provide you with the PIN for the instructor side of the profile.
The host will earn half of the cut Workit takes as a fee while hosting challenges.
In the future, we want to move that feature to the user side, so it will be much easier.

I wasn’t aware of this app, but as a big runner and Bitcoiner, I’m super excited to try this app and the challenges! Let’s get moving!
reply
Awesome! Looking forward to seeing you in our challenges!
reply
Have you guys heard of Nostr? 👀
It would be an amazing addition to your marketing plan! Tons of health-focused bitcoiners over there to bring onboard 💪⚡️
reply
Hey! Definitely! We've been on Nostr for quite some time but only recently started posting. We don’t have much of a following there yet, but we’ll keep pushing more actively!
reply
👏👏👏👏👏👏
I really love this app, have you thought about partnering with gyms and/or sport centers? I see a lot of potential here, gym users exercising and earning sats, everyone will eventually join in (discounts, prizes, offers...)
reply
Yes! There’s a very cool opportunity to map gyms and offer gym-goers a loyalty program for consistency. There are even more creative things you can do, but that would be a long topic!

Could you explain the business model?, is the app free to use?, what data from the users do you collect and what do you do with it?
Thanks
reply
We only have access to Apple's health data, which is not stored on our end. You can use the Lightning keychain, earn 10 sats a day for free, and play challenges for free.
We generate revenue in two ways:
  1. Premium Subscriptions: Users purchase a premium subscription to unlock workout programs and personalized nutrition plans, mostly used by the weight loss community. We reward them with sats for their exercise efforts, ideally encouraging them to start playing challenges.
  2. Step Challenges: For example, 10 people bet 10K sats each to enter a challenge, creating a prize pool of 100K sats. The goal is to walk 10K steps a day for two weeks. If 5 participants win and 5 lose, we take a small cut from the pot of the participants who lost. The remaining goes to the winners.
Hope this helps!

reply
That's awesome! We are currently part of an accelerator program. In January, we will raise our pre-seed and skyrocket the project!
reply
This is very cool. But how do you stop users from gaming it?
reply
At the moment, we have a very basic anti-cheat system integrated, but as we raise our pre-seed, we’ll work on improving it!
reply
Where do you see workit in 5 years in adoption?
reply
Ideally, we have 20 million monthly active users, and we’re preparing to release something special
reply
Is there an option to stack sats while having sex?
reply
Actually, yes. Our next release will be 'heartbeat' rewards. You will need to wearing your smartwatch though!
reply
All the best for further developments!

I have been enjoying workit right from the beginning. Just completed the 4th challenge in November and it’s been great.
It’s great to receive sats while you’re doing exercise.

All I can say is that the app runs smoothly, easy to withdraw sats whenever I tried and it’s great you can earn while doing exercise.
I thinks it’s a great idea and I hope you keep doing this great job
reply
Thank you so much!
reply
Are there plans to localize the app for specific countries or fitness cultures?
reply
Do you mean language-wise? Then yes!
I’m not entirely sure what you mean by fitness cultures, but what we had in mind was doing a #RunningBitcoin (halfin-style) challenge. So organizing marathons has definitely crossed our minds.

Exactly! This is what I was asking for Thank you
reply
Do you listen music while workit? If yes, any particular song?
reply
Well, when I exercise, I don’t. But if I go for a walk, then yes.
I particularly love Harold Budd, Brian Eno, and Burial. But there are many others. I listen to all genres of music.
reply
Cool. You're very much like me or I'm like you. ;)
reply
Thank you!!
reply
Is your app on IOS are ads free and do i need to buy any premium service for more options?
reply
You can play challenges and earn sats for your steps for free. You can send/receive Bitcoin without limits, no withdrawal thresholds. There are no ads in the application.
If you want access to workout programs and the ability to earn Bitcoin for exercising, you’ll need to purchase the premium subscription. Premium users can also participate in up to three challenges simultaneously.
reply
What’s been the hardest part of building Workit so far?
reply
Building the lightning infrastructure and integrating it into the app. 100% this.
reply
Haha! you're not just lighting up the fitness world, but the whole infrastructure too!

How @Workit_LN earn from it's users?
reply
We generate revenue from premium subscriptions and by taking a cut from the prize pools of the step challenges we host.
We also give away 10 sats for free in exchange for completing 10K steps a day. This cost is covered by the revenue we generate from premium subscriptions.
reply
How normal earning counts (How many SATs for x steps)
reply
For free rewards, 1K steps = 1 sat.
As for the challenges, it is based on a point system. 1K steps = 6 points.

have you looked into https://exerwin.com/philosophy.pdf ? the author has put further development of this project on hold, due to lack of funding for marketing. i told him that it has to become open-source and lightning-based

What business are you in vs what business are you really in?
As in: I've seen a number of these freebies/pay-for-activity apps come and go; they don't ever seem to do anything but distribute value and go bankrupt. I'll happily try it (=take your sats) but what exactly is it that you're selling, why is your product a thing at all? What is it you're making money on, etc?
Put differently again (in regards to my music-has-no-value post #796401), why am I being paid for doing something that isn't scarce and isn't economically valuable (i.e., fitness/workout/moving)?

What’s something you believe about bitcoin that few bitcoiners agree with you on?
reply
Well, it’s hard to quantify how many agree and how many don’t, but I’ll give it a shot:
The way I see Bitcoin being widely adopted as a medium of exchange, it won’t come from El Salvador, the United States, or any nation-state.
I believe a new city will be built from scratch.

reply
Yes, that’s part of the plan, but not at the moment. We are currently focused on step challenges, but our next challenge type will be based on heartbeats, essentially focusing on exercise. For example, “Stay in your personal active zone for X minutes to achieve the daily challenge milestone goal.”

Almost 200K followers on Instagram is extremely impressive 🔥
What was the key to achieving such a strong foothold over there?

We’ve basically cracked what goes viral on Instagram. Recently, they allowed carousel posts with music to appear in the Reels Explore section (like TikTok). It’s a great way to grow quickly if you create the right content for the right audience.

The app relies on Apple's health data to track your steps. That's the only data we have access to.

Thanks for the answer. I mean, there's bitcoiners that use open source android OSs, that can't or won't use google or apple.
