Yeah, but at the same time I am reluctant to recommend them self custody.  I don't know if I trust them to keep their keys secure and I wouldn't want them to blame me if they mess up somehow.

Exactly. And on that topic they very likely are more at risk of lose than you or I because of their ignorance or laziness with security.

I think people just have to learn the hard way. And there will be many rug pulls. I don't think it will ever end and it seems to be the way humans learn.
