Hi, with stacker news' switch to non-custodial, I think it's finally time for me to run my own lightning node and get away from managed solutions like Phoenix. They are absolutely fine and non-custodial as well, but they are expensive and I want full control now.
For those of you running your own lightning node, I'd be extremely interested in your best practices and how they have changed over time.
Which node / management software stack would you recommend and why? How do you manage your liquidity? What clients / wallets do you use with them?
I don't need 'beginner friendly' software, I am interested in the most complete and best solution.
Thanks a lot in advance and happy new year!

Thanks! What’s your opinion on Umbrel as a hub for everything?

Start reading here, I wrote several guides about running LN nodes https://darth-coin.github.io/nodes/nodes-en.html
The important question you should start is: which type of node you need?
  • public routing
  • private payments
Each one is a bit different and I describe it in those guides. Those guides are covering all your questions, in details.

I moved to Start9 and bought the Server One. My RPi4 was about 2 years old, Umbrel doesnt seem to have a great way to backup and I was starting to worry about my channels. I also had a few issues with Umbrel after updates. There wasnt a clear path forward or support.
Use proper hardware. Using a Raspberry Pi will get you in troubles sooner or later. You could even use a older notebook as it has a battery integrated.

Using NWC seems to be working pretty well. Albyhub with LND was going well for me.
Now I'm using NWC with Rizful and haven't had any issues so far.
