I have become both fascinated and annoyed by Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
On one hand you have to consider him a coach of the year candidate and an amazing leader who gets the absolute best out of his players. He has built a great culture and puts a lot of faith in his assistants to pursue excellence. I mean the results speak for themselves.
On the other hand he makes a lot of reckless and dumb decisions seemingly to prove how tough and brave he is. I think his players love him for this but that schtick only works when things are going well. He admitted last year he cost the team the NFC championship with a series of dumb overly aggressive decisions and his response this year seems to be to double, even triple down on that style of coaching. The Lions have their biggest game of the year, that will decide home field advantage for the entire NFC playoffs, against the Vikings on Sunday. One benefit to the Lions is they will be at home for this game but will be on a rest and travel disadvantage. Yet Campbell in true Campbell style was committed to ensuring his team exacted revenge on a mess of a 49ers team to make up for their NFC Championship defeat. He admitted this and multiple players mentioned it as well. Again, I think this kind of decision making is very popular with players and fans and when it works it likely only enhances team culture but like a leveraged degen crypto trader it seems to merely be a question of when not if Dan Campbell's reckless nature will lead to the Lions getting rekt. But can he will them to a Super Bowl first?
I am sure there are a myriad of outcomes in between but to me what seems most likely is either Campbell manages to ride this wave all the way to a Super Bowl victory and becomes a Detroit legend for all of eternity or it all blows up in his face and he stupidly costs them another playoff game. I am not rooting for either outcome but I sure as hell will be watching to see how it all plays out.
Sats for all,
