pull down to refresh

Several years ago, I spent a lot of money to buy the domain name WhatIsBitcoin.com and have slowly been building it into a website in my spare time. The idea is to create an informational resource that covers a lot of the basics of bitcoin as well as some articles to keep things fresh and provide some less objective thoughts/ideas about bitcoin and how it's used. Now that I am a territory founder here on SN, I have a vested interest in the long-term success of Stacker News becoming one of the most popular websites on the internet. How can I best use WhatIsBitcoin to help grow the number of users here on SN?

The Backstory

When I first got into bitcoin, I wanted to do something to help adoption. I wasn't exactly sure how I could help but I came to the conclusion that when people initially hear about bitcoin, the very first question they ask is "What is bitcoin?". In order to help bring Bitcoin to more people, I decided to focus on answering that question. The first thing I needed was a website.
I checked to see if WhatIsBitcoin.com was available but it wasn't so I decided to get the next best thing. I got the username “@WhatIsBitcoin” on both Twitter and Instagram for free and just focused on stacking as many sats as I could afford at the time.
Over the years I visited the website at WhatIsBitcoin.com but every time I visited, it never seemed like it was ever really being built or worked on. After a quick search on WhoIs.com, I found an email address that was used to register the domain. I got the name Marin and an email address somewhere in Russia. I knew it was a long shot but I sent an email asking if the dormant domain was available for sale.
No response.
After multiple attempts over the years, I had pretty much by given up on the idea and even tried to sell the social media handles to the owner of the website in hopes that he would put them to use. I had all but given up on the idea until one fateful day when I was on Reddit, I came across something that piqued my interest.
Somebody had posted that the domain name “WhatIsBitcoin.com” was for sale for $1,500 worth of ETH. A common tragedy amongst many bitcoiners at the time.
I sent a DM to see if it was still available and much to my surprise, it was.
I thought I was dreaming. I thought it was a scam or too good to be true.
Naturally, I cautiously moved forward with the purchase. I asked him if he was ok with using some sort of escrow services so that I was protected from getting scammed. After a couple of emails back and forth, he said that I would basically just have to trust him. I could tell that he was educated and all of his responses made it clear that he understands the game theory of cooperation vs. collusion and also that he was moving onto ETH instead of bitcoin. Poor guy.
I was definitely nervous but I decided to pull the trigger. I paid a friend some fiat to send some ETH to the sellers payment address.
It was only a few minutes later that I got an email notification from my registrar that the domain name WhatIsBitcoin.com was being transferred to me.
I couldn't believe it. I finally got the domain name that I had been chasing for years but now what?

Building A Website

I have been building and iterating a website for quite some time now but only as a side hustle whenever I have extra time or I carve out some time in my schedule.
I have a pretty solid base of around 100 glossary pages that are just for basic education but a lot of them still need a lot of work and updating with images, infographics, videos, tweets, nostr notes, etc.
I also have about 100 articles on the site that are more than just educational resources pages. These are actual articles with all sorts of in-depth ideas, concepts, guides, opinions, data, reviews, etc. while the glossary pages are linked TO from these articles to help with deeper education of certain terms.
The idea is to focus on educating newer users but the more I think about it, you can only learn so much from reading. You need to be asking questions and getting all sorts of nuanced answers like what happens on Reddit. Like what happens here on Stacker News.
As stacker news continues to grow, it will hopefully attract more new users who want specific answers to their bitcoin questions as well as hundreds of other niche territories that will inevitably pop up.
In order for the website to scale and sustain itself, I will need to generate revenue somehow. Since I don't want to cover the site with a bunch of privacy-invasive ads like Bitcoin Magazine, I have opted to try to make some referral commissions by sending people to the best bitcoin services. Some of these services have an affiliate program. For example: I believe that the PunchPlate is the best steel plate to write your seed phrase for its price and in the US. I also earn a small commission if you buy one using my promo code.
So far, I have earned 0 sats from affiliate sales because bitcoiners simply don't spend and replenish. I think this is largely because of cap gains taxes and it's too difficult to get new bitcoin.
So, I have been building a website to educate new users about bitcoin and looking for ways to effectively monetize it without selling out to ads from surveillance companies like Google and Facebook.
The only problem with all of this is that I have been building the site in my free time for years and I don't have a solid way to generate revenue so I can't work on it full time.

Founding Territories

Only a few months ago did I discover that you can found a stacker news territory and generate revenue from it. I did a bunch of research to see how it all works and decided that I want a territory to ensure that we always have a place to post some of the most generic content like movies, memes, events, podcasts, videos, etc. After some long talks with friends, some of them wanted in so we pitched to found a couple territories. It is definitely going to take a long time to break even. I paid more for each of the territories that I founded than I did for WhatIsBitcoin.com but territories generated me some sats on the same day that I founded my first territories.

Driving New Users

To help drive more traffic here on Stacker News, I only have a couple banners on the site as well as links to several territories like Jobs, Memes, Events, Podcasts but I would like to drive as much traffic as possible to targeted posts that are relevant to a topic. Al of that being said, I need some input from the plebs.
How can I best serve global bitcoin with WhatIsBitcoin.com? What do you think I should I do with the site?
Should I slowly dismantle all of the articles and post them here on stacker news? I make substantially more on here with zaps than I do anywhere else on the internet.
Should I reduce it to a basic information site that answers a few questions about bitcoin and then write all of my latest Bitcoin articles on SN?
Should I use it as a funnel to drive more traffic here on SN? I have become much more convicted about driving fresh sats here to ensure that the SN circular economy thrives.
Should I sell it, buy sats, and do nothing but list my content here on SN?
Should I just hodl it to prevent it from falling into the hands of shitcoiners? I don’t want such a powerful domain to fall into the hands of anyone who might want to use it against us all.
Any input is appreciated.
hard question, keep the domain for sure, but I think it's just hard these days with people consuming most of their info via ticktok or youtube. porting the articles gradually here would be a good idea, esp in the bitcoin beginners thread as people who have floated over are, presumably, already interested in learning

Thanks for your input.
I will come up with a way to bring a lot of the beginner content over here.

I think this website has value, and it would be a pity to shut it down directly.
Whether to continue running it depends on the balance between income and costs. I don’t know how much it costs you to maintain this website. If the cost is as low as $500 per year, would you still consider operating it even with zero income? It seems to be a WordPress site, and with proper optimization, reducing costs should be feasible. WordPress is a very mature platform, so there should be plenty of ready-made solutions available.
I believe ads and affiliate programs are acceptable. I guess that even generating a small amount of revenue could give you more confidence. Once the issue of survival is addressed, you would have more capacity to explore other possibilities.
It seems that the website's operation is not very refined. Questions such as where the traffic is coming from, which keywords are driving it, and which pages are most popular are crucial. You might need some SEO tools to gain insights into your website and users, such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
As for driving traffic to Stacker News, I think you would also need tools to help you evaluate its effectiveness. If you could accurately track how many people click on a Stacker News territory link from different pages each day, you could experiment with different approaches and optimize the results.

Yes, that's exactly what I am thinking.

Yes, I need a way to track traffic more accurately without compromising user privacy.
Thanks a bunch for your input. It will help guide me as I figure out my next steps.

Sorry I can't be of more help though regarding your query.

in the way you want to attract more users you have almost all the digital resource covered, content marketing with banner ads is fine, but you must take into account the SEO of the website, in the case of making it a service website, the theme is to bring users new to the ecosystem to learn more about BTC and its ecosystem, it is fine, the focus on service site or landing page to make known in a bibliographic way what is BTC and its nature. in any part of the topic, the use of a website to generate income and at the same time monetize giving teachings of BTC seems to me a good idea, at the end of the day teachers physically collect their salaries for teaching our children, that there is a website that provides content about BTC and through content marketing, affiliates or perhaps even network marketing generates income for you. thanks for share. sats for all.

If you planned that domain for Bitcoin education, then use it. But Bitcoin education must be free if you really want to do "education". Otherwise you became a whore of your "sponsors".
If you your main goal was to earn money with that site, then convert it into a "service" website, where you sell professional services for businesses, specific bitcoin consultancy, tailored support etc. But the domain name is not so attractive for that. Also you choose a .com for an information domain... not so clever.
If I were you and don't have time and enough desire to maintain it as it is with basic information about "what is bitcoin"... then sell it or give it to somebody that can manage it... but without bringing bullshit banners for revenue.
If I am a noob looking for basic information about bitcoin, I will stay away from ANY website with bullshit banners promoting all kind of crap.

I agree with Darth. The information must be free or your incentives will shift in an instant and you will feel empty while working on it, knowing you aren't being entirely true.
reply
Yeah, everything is free and always will be but there are some bitcoin services and products that I already refer people to use and some of them have affiliate programs so I don’t think it’s unreasonable or shady to try to generate revenue from the site via selling quality bitcoin services/products.
reply
If you really want to make "bitcoin education" never be anybody's whore... Except if you are offering specialized services, I mean people are paying (based on a contract) you for helping them to build a solution based on bitcoin. Then you can sell other adjacent products with referral codes etc. as an extra.
Otherwise is just prostitution.
reply
So if I promote a steel plate to stamp seed phrases into and I earn a commission for any sales that I drive, then you think that makes me a whore for that company?
reply
Yes. Is selling bitcoin products your MAIN business activity? If yes, then you are not a whore, you are a business.
reply
But if I DO promote a business but I don't receive any sort of commission, then I am NOT a whore?
reply
One thing is to promote and sell their products upfront and another thing is to promote and sell as adjacent income separate from your website.
As I said, depends what do you want to do: education or selling products. Don't do both, is not gonna work.
Or make a separate business only with selling products.
Bitcoin education must be free
Heh, I didn’t expect to see this from you 🙂
reply
Why? Did you saw me charging any sat on my guides page? I stop doing any work in 2019 and dedicate ALL my time to Bitcoin for free and helping people. Yes, not anybody can do that, but I did it because I can and I want.
reply
Must any education be free then? Or bitcoin education only?
I did it because I can and I want
which, I believe, many appreciate very much, including myself.
reply
Must any education be free then?
This is quite general question. And can't be answered by a simply yes or no.
  • Basic education (bitcoin included) - YES. Here also can apply a V4V if people want it. For this basic education I am for the home schooling. Up until 12-14 years a kid can be schooled at home, easily and free. If the parents want a private teacher then yes, they will have to pay, because the time of that teacher it cost money. But education material will be free.
  • Professional education (like getting skills in manufacturing, crafting etc) - NO.
  • Specialized education (high skilled professions) - NO
Can somebody make money from education? Maybe idk I am not a teacher. I see now appearing some "Bitcoin hubs" or companies that are giving paid bitcoin consultancy. But I also see that they have the basic training material for free and only the specialized part is paid. Workshops are not cheap too. That's the good way.

Your guides are some of the best in the world, Darth. I don't see you charging any sats for your guides but you are also the strongest believer of pay-to-post so I can conclude that you think people's time has value and it's ok to charge money for things.
I think if you have a good guide, it's fine for you to attempt to sell products that are valuable. For example, I use PunchPlate because I think it is the best product for the price in the US. It ranked AAAA on Lopp's stress test and is a nicely finished product.
These plates are a great value and I use them a lot: https://codl.co/collections/24-word-punchplates
I have led lots of people to buy them but one day I learned that I could both offer people a discount and even earn some sats for driving people to a product that I was already sending people to use.
If you use the promo code "WIB", then you get $3.75 discount and I earn some sats too.
I think a website can offer free education and still make honest money with a promo code and this is exactly how.

I think it is a valuable domain. I don't think you should discard it.
Use it for what it was intended as a curation of learning resources.
If the site is good enough you can probably get bitcoin companies to advertise on it and at least recoup your initial investment.
Poor Marin. Another lost soul duped by the affinity scam machine. He may need to visit your site more than anyone.
reply
Yes, it's absolutely valuable, I think GoDaddy had it appraised at $30k last time I checked back in 2021.
I will continue to grow the site but maybe I can find a better way to promote things without being spammy or scammy.
