Also what do we think of this one liner for SN:

The front page of Bitcoin

I know! We need to do some more AMAs.

you should make rounds on more bitcoin podcasts. Backlinks would be very helpful.

What does everyone think of getting rid of the notion of upvotes? It's kind of vestigial. Instead:
  1. a post would start out with zero sats (although users would still pay 1 sat to post it) and the 'sats' amount would be strictly what they've earned
  2. tapping the lightning icon would always work like a tip ... if you configure your tip amount to be 10 sats, every click of the lightning icon would be 10 sats - not 1 sat then 10 sats
I feel like this is conceptually simpler.
Then for ranking, we don't consider upvotes, we consider the count of how many users have tipped.
reply
I like the idea. Is it possible and reasonable to make a mix of both for the ranking mechanism? A bad actor now needs more effort(create several accs.) and has to put more value(sats) in to push his own stuff
reply
Maybe. Every new variable we add increases both complexity and attack surface. We can experiment with it though. Nothing is off the table really.
reply
I didn't even know that tips and upvotes were different.
So I can't upvote like 100X by tipping 100 sats?
reply
No, it's ranked by the number of users who have tipped, not the total tip amount. Otherwise whales would control the front page rather than the plebs.

Here's another feature to consider.
When I stack (earn) sats from posts and comments on SN, I would like to see those sats automatically redistributed to other contributors in some way. I'm happy topping up my wallet to pay for my activities (posts, comments, upvotes, etc.) but I would love to see those funds that are earned on SN re-circulating. I could do that manually, but I'ld like to see some way I can configure my account where this would be done in an automated fashion.
What do you think of this idea?
Let's say today I earned (stacked) 50 sats. At the end of the day, I'ld like to see those 50 sats I earned get re-distributed automatically to other contributors. Maybe this distribution amount of 50 sats goes into a pot and that pot gets divided evenly to anyone who posted a comment that day. Or evenly to any new posts for that day, ..., or maybe some allocation that is proportionate (posts with a higher number of upvotes gets a greater share of this daily redistribution pot).
It doesn't need to be complicated ... I simply mark a configuration setting like "auto-redistribute stacked earnings?" or something like that. Then any time I stack (earn) sats .... instead of those going into my wallet balance, they go into the "auto-redistribution' pot.
Again, this would (should) be totally voluntary -- i.e., opt-in rather than the default.
But I think if this were implemented it would result in an increase the financial reward (quantity of sats stacked) for those who contribute content (posts, and/or comments) here on SN -- a feature that is the primary thing that differentiates SN from the numerous other social media (HackerNews, Reddit, etc.).

We plan to eventually have the site’s revenue be distributed. Perhaps after that’s implemented we can allow users to contribute to it.

I see another request, but for a different way to contribute, in this SN item:

🤔
If the site's revenue gets redistributed, what then will keep the lights on (and AWS charges)?
reply
Not all of the revenue in perpetuity! Hopefully enough to make a difference for the best users and enough to keep us alive.

Subsidizing growth, until it it is sustainable organically. Awesome! Looking forward to that.
reply
Exactly! Plus good users are doing work + paying on here. It makes sense that we give as much as we can back to them.

I would like to configure the number of sats I spend for one "tap" (when upvoting).
I tire of tapping 10 times or 20 times (to get to 10 or 20 sats), and the long-press requires more than just a mouse click, so I rarely do that.
The end result is that I end up spending fewer sats than I otherwise would.
I almost always leave any pennies I receive in the "give a penny / take a penny" tin at the store, without a second thought (that's ~20 sats each), but when tapping I get to 5 or 10 sats and think, "*OK, maybe that's helpful".
  1. Sats. Even. Doesn't. Move. The. Needle. Not. One. Bit.
If I knew one tap was 20 sats, ... I might be more inclined to give 100 sats for a post I am appreciative to see. If I set my default "per tap" amount to 20 sats, and I think ... no, this one gets just a single sat, or whatever, I can use the long press, and manually type in the 1 sat, or whatever.
The default for new accounts can be 1 sat per click, but those of use who want to do more to support SN, or, to more easily re-distribute that sats that have been stacked from our posts, the ability to configure a higher number of sats per tap would be a nice feature.

You can configure your tip default (your second tap) in settings which you access from the dropdown.
The tipping ux needs reworking. We have some ideas.
reply
Oh wow, I never knew about that.
That's exactly what I was asking for. Already implemented.
You rock!!
