Sorry if I asked this before. I don't know if this is a problem for others, but I find myself unmuting stackers long after they have become good contributors. Therefore I am probably missing good content.
I have a theory, which I can't prove, that new arrivals on SN, coming from other social media sites, sometimes have developed an asshole persona that doesn't fly here. These people either depart quickly, or turn into good contributors.
I don't consider myself quick on the draw when it comes to muting, but I will do it to assholes, particularly if they are new here. I feel like I don't have an easy way of keeping track of them. Has anyone else noticed this?

Don’t you love when someone asks for a feature that you already have? lol

So satisfying! Thank you!

Any time. As I get older it will happen more frequently.

They post slop, I mute.
Simple as.
Every time I've clicked to reveal a post from someone I've muted, I'm reminded why.

I've lost all patience for chatbot comments. The stick out like a sore thumb. Been down-zapping and shaming them. Maybe this is dumb but it enjoy it.

I'm curious about your methodology. I also think I have a pretty slow trigger finger, but often people are just over-the-top assholes and there's no question about it. When I see a reply in an interesting place that's muted I'll sometimes look at it to re-evaluate.
The hardest are users that, from time to time, slip into periods of being generally okay, and then I un-mute them, only for them to return to their assholish ways in short order, and thus need re-muting. Sometimes I think that it would be good if there were a "mute leaderboard" where you could see, globally, who has been muted the most. But then I wonder if there would be something perverse in that.
A good lesson that we each contain multitudes, I suppose.

I wish I had a methodology, or at least a useful one. I have had the same experience with an account being okay for a while, then reverting. Now that I realize I can access a list of my mutes, I'll check out their posts, comments, etc. As @grayruby pointed out, I think many are bots, so they should be easy to identify.

Interesting theory. I have witnessed at least one SN user that made this transformation.
I think one factor is that they may be used to users being more kneejerk in their reactions and SN users often break out of stereotypes and surprise them. Its something I've witnessed over the years on social media. People assume you either are on team d or team r. When you don't fit the mold they get confused. Its kinda funny.

Yes, partisan politics probably play a big part in what I think I have noticed.

I'm extremely slow to mute. As such, I haven't felt the urge to unmute.
I need to be convinced the account has no value to add. I'll just ignore assholery on my own, if it's someone who does occasionally have something of substance to say.
My feeling is that there's more mileage to be had with leading the assholes to water.
I completely agree with your hypothesis about people coming in pretty hot. The rest of the internet leads to a certain knee-jerk savagery and it takes a bit to adjust to SN's more mellow tone.
reply
Seems like the poeple that are slow to anger and are willing to listen are the people that stick around SN. Not saying there arent the outliers. Lol

You have to click on your settings and among the top four options, there it is.
reply
Go to your settings and it automatically defaults to general but muted stackers is a category you can switch to. It's right at the top of the page.

I had no clue! I can't believe how long my list is. So much for me thinking I don't mute often. Never mind.
reply
My list is long too but they are all bots, sats farmers or blatant shitcoiners.
I don't think I mute often but over time you can compile a pretty long list even if you are only muting every once and a while.
reply
Yeah, I'm proof of that. I am tempted to sift through the list to see if any of these accounts have been rehabilitated.
reply
I very rarely see a comment that says "from a stacker you muted" and am compelled to view it but it has happened a few times.
reply
Yes, I get them too. Actually, I unmuted someone the other day because it was a decent reply.
reply
Should I give @FartOnMyBalls a second chance?
reply
You could, but that account isn't very active.
