pull down to refresh

I started writing a long winded post about how I'm a runner and how I want to improve my marathon time, but it sounded boring, so I scrapped that. I guess I'm just trying to do some sort of weekly accountability post so my training is in the public, and maybe rely on some peer pressure to force myself to stick to my training plan. I'm hoping to train enough by race day (May 4th), and be able to achieve my goal of completing a marathon in under 4 hours. I'm also a regular drinker who loves whiskey, but do attempt to completely quit drinking during marathon training. So I guess I should write down my alcohol consumption of the week as well.
Since I finally went for a long run today, I guess I'll count this week as week 1.
Week 1 Stats:
3 runs Tuesday - 10km - 5:52/km pace Thursday - 6km - 5:59/km pace Sunday - 17km - 6:02/km pace
Weekly Total - 33km - about 6:00/km average pace
Alcohol consumption: 1 can of 355mL beer on Tuesday
How this week felt: Feeling out of shape. Pace is too slow to reach my goal. Legs tired from work, especially during the Thursday run. Hoping for better results next week.
keep at it, my dude.
Looking forward to seeing the progress

Thanks!

Do you have a plan? Following a schedule made all the difference for my first races. Freestyling it before that was painful.

Full marathon?

Yes, full 42.2km.

Nice goal! A full marathon under 4 hrs is not for everyone.
I did one marathon few years ago, my time was 4:25. It was a painful and great experience.
Not planning to run another one.

I got a new PB of 4h15 last year. I think under 4 is reachable with enough training. It's not a crazy difficult goal.

What’s the game plan ? I would like to see some more kms even 5 a day plus the long run Sunday would get you moving. Thoughts from a retired marathon guy that only did one

Plan is to run 3 times a week. 10k, 6k, and long runs on Sunday. Off days I do some body weight exercises to train my muscles. I work in construction, so i also need to save some energy for work. Over training kills the legs and could even lead to injury. This will be my 6th full marathon. I've ran 5 since 2018, so I kind of know what I'm doing.

Yeah true what were your previous times?

2018: 4h34m 2020: 4h56m 2022: 4h26m 2023: 4h32m 2024: 4h15m
2020 was the toughest, because they cancelled the event due to covid and asked participants to just run a marathon on their own, then upload the results. So there were no road closures, no water / electrolyte stations, no support. The silver lining was that I ran over the finish line drawn by my kids with chalk on the sidewalk in front of my house; that felt quite satisfying.

Great work! And all those are off three runs a week? Do you increase the long run distance or nah?
My best and only was 3:53
Was on for a 3:20 but had some knee issues which I found out after was my hip or whatever was out and probably caused it
Ran half on target then had a run walk half to finish
I think I needed more kms on the legs not less which is why I find your theory interesting
reply
No, all those were from 1-2 runs a week, with 1 short run and 1 long run, sometimes 3 a week but mostly 2. I usually do 23km for my long runs tho, and would slot in a 30km 2 months prior to race day and a 38km 1 month prior.
I felt I've been under trained for all my previous marathons except for 2023, due to me not sticking to a schedule. I was well trained and on pace to beat 4hr in 2023, then I got owned by blisters and ended up limping for the final 10km. All my previous marathons I've been plagued with blister problems. I finally found the solution in 2 layer socks last year, where I was under trained and still got PB because I didn't have to run in pain from blisters.
But yea, inconsistent training schedule and under training had been keeping me slow. That's why I decided to start this post and maybe it will help put me on a schedule and keep me accountable.
On pace for 3:20 and still finishing at 3:53 while having knee/hip problems is fast. Good for you!
