I can see that it would cause massive cognitive dissonance in the Establishment. I think that EOs are illegitimate for making policy that requires law, but OK for management of the executive branch. I think that doing lawmaking and regulation by EO should be cut off by SCOTUS.
As you said, the chickens are coming home to roost on the executive order problem.

I was explaining this to a colleague the other day, who didn't understand what EO's were for (but was sure there was something Hitlerian about what Trump's doing).

You didn't know Hitler offered severance to 6 million Jews but they didn't accept his offer?

It seems more like they just didn't read the fine print

Well, were they offered, a free trip to a luxurious camping facility in exotic Poland where they could frolic to hearts content or were they offered a quick trip to a concentration camp? It makes a difference how you present these things. The very, very fine print probably said something like, “quick trip to a death camp.” Very, very, very fine print and when the contract was offered the room was lit by only one small candle,

Judaism is all about reading the fine print. Otherwise rabbis would be unemployed

When their leaders make their landings, the EWC rabbis will have a very different kind of work going for themselves.

Of course, they have been trained to think (if it isn’t TDS) that any of Trump’s EOs are for the purpose of misogyny, racism and terror. They cannot get it through their heads that Trump is doing the same as OBummer and Obiden as well as JFK. That is one of the Presidents’ jobs, manage the executive branch.
Sounds like you colleague skipped out on the civics classes in high school.

I think it's just a dumb part of the ordinary political discourse: any executive orders the other party issues are tyrannical overreaches (usually, that is correct).

Yes it is politics and it is the same, of course, depending upon which team you are on. Everything the other side does is stark raving lunacy and everything your side does is the height of compassion and rationality. Again, just politics. I think we all saw the same thing with politics in high school as the “big boy” stuff we see now. It never changes.
