I wonder if there's a way to check out the firmware. I guess guys who know what they're doing buy them. There is a large used market for miners, right?

I know for other ebay items there are established sellers who put low cost items on ebay.

Also, kaboomracks sells used miners, I think.

You should be able to flash firmware yourself. And you should be able to verify the firmware, too
