It seems like this person just wanted to complain, regardless of the solution. You tried to suggest something practical, but that’s clearly not what they wanted to hear. Sometimes, you can’t win—it’s best to just move on and focus on what really matters.
reply
That's the destructive part. We couldn't really discuss the more practical matters because this person kept going on and on and no one stepped up to cut it off.
Look, even if you agree that it's bad for the environment, what exactly is one university supposed to do about that? Let's just focus on the task at hand which is to strategize about how our university will use AI in teaching and research.

Was nobody moderating the meeting? It’s up to them to make sure the meeting is moderate to be productive imo.
reply
The chair didn't interrupt or stop it. But to her credit, she didn't really engage on those topics either; just moved on after the person was done talking.

Are university professors already starting to get scared, especially with Bill Gates' recent statements that AIs will replace teachers and doctors in about 10 years.
reply
I think some of them are, yeah.
reply
I can relate. I've heard plenty of fairly unhinged concerns over the past few months.
reply
A well-thought out, one line rhetorical question can stop a lot of that.
reply
While also putting a target on oneself.
I'd have to care a lot more about my organization and/or coworkers to bother with that.
reply
Same reason I keep quiet. There might be a time to speak up, but you gotta be strategic about it. One wasted meeting isn't worth it
I actually have spoken up before on a much more serious issue.., a potential hiring candidate was gonna get cut simply because he was white and I spoke out there

I hope to eventually be in a situation where I care enough to not hold my tongue.

If you care enough you'll speak.

You have to speak up.you can exclude someone because they are white just like you can't if they are black. People got this shit all mixed up.

Principled people always have targets on their back. People like compromisers. Be principled. Be respected. Fuck being liked.
reply
My goal isn't to be liked. I speak my mind to people I respect, whether we agree or disagree with each other.
I'm not currently in a situation where I respect those around me enough to consider speaking up worth the hassle it would create. That's why I need a change of scenery. It's not good to be surrounded by people you don't respect.

I hear that. You gotta get outta there!
Reads to me like you all are the problem for dishonesty and allowing this foolish waste of time. Where is leadershi? This can be dealt with tactfully without the appeasetment. Y'all chose this path of response.
reply
I agree, the non confrontational culture is part of the problem. Still this is just one meeting and you gotta pick your battles. This person isn't normally on the committee so if she comes again then we'll see if more people step up.
reply
I'm my experience or only takes one.

AI is Eurocentric
As in white European?
not everyone knows how to use AI equally
I love this kind of thinking... it leads to the kind of hellscape Ayn Rand wrote about in "We the Living". Mind blowing when you hear people actually say stuff like that with a straight face.
I felt like we couldn't get much done.
Well, it is "Higher Ed" after all(I worked in it for several years).
Good lord I'm glad I don't work in higher ed or government connected work anymore.
reply
I really don't know what was meant by the eurocentric comment. Most of the training data was in English I guess???? More likely to quote western sources????
Good lord I'm glad I don't work in higher ed or government connected work anymore.
Sigh.....
