Has anyone developed a lightning wallet using a raspberry pi or something like that? This would be a device that could fit in your pocket with a small screen and QR scanner for people that can't afford or don't want to carry a smart phone. It would use wifi or something like that. Is this too much of a security headache? Can it be done easily with any wallet's current software?

Why not buy an old Google Pixel like a 4a or 5. Install GrapheneOS on it. Don't put a sim card in it. Only use WiFi.
Now you can use any wallet apps. You can choose to not install any apps on this device.
What you are describing exists. You can buy a Pixel 4a on Amazon for $200 and you are done.
Not sure why you don't want the phone. It's just a computer. There are Cyberdeck type devices that run Linux on SBC and you could install Blue wallet but it would be way more clunky.
I dig pocket computers but not for a spending wallet.

Yeah, I was thinking something like under $50 all in. This is a great idea though. I’m less thinking of for myself so much as folks that straight up CANNOT be spied on or just don’t have much capital.

Under 50 would be tough these days for a computer of any sort that is portable and pocket size.

I guess part of what made me start thinking about this is learning how to setup raspberry pi 0s, which they sell for $10 at the microcenter I go to.

That’s said, that’s before camera, battery, and all that stuff k00b mentioned.

That's a zero. They have their usage but I'm skeptical of them for your use case. You'd need a screen and input device.

You're probably not going to get an internet connected device, with battery, with cameras, with user input, and one that fits in your pocket, cheaper than a used phone. I think it might be better to just create something like StartOS or Umbrel that runs on a phone. The reason mobile lightning sucks generally is that the operating systems don't "wallets" to keep running when they aren't in the foreground.
It'd be cool to have dedicated device though. There might be form factors and capabilities that are better delivered in a dedicated device than a smartphone.

What is your take on something like this, k00b?

What application does this have?

Yeah, that makes sense, but to clarify, I’m thinking something custodial. This would literally be a device dedicated to running coinos or wos.

Isn't it contradictory to have a cold wallet for lightning?
I'm not too technically sound but I remember I read somewhere that lightning wallets can't be a cold one like Bitcoin cold wallets.

Yeah, but OP didn't say anything about it being cold (other than the reference to current wallets as a subset of possibilities).
reply
0 sats \ 0 replies \ @jasonb OP 20h
Yeah, this would not be to make it cold. This would be to have something that’s not a native tracking device and is (ideally) really cheap.

I think there’s something from LN Bits from years back that was made by Ben Arc.
This might be what you’re looking for.

I use to carry an iPod with an LNURL withdraw and an LNURL deposit that almost did the same thing. I imagine with Bolt12 something could be done at least for the deposit side now, but idk.

I was looking for an HWW and I came across keystone wallet which actually supports Zeus and one or two more lightning wallets. It remains offline and it seems similar to your description.
It would be great if you may please have a look at its specifications and tell me if that's the thing you're talking about.

i don't know but i think the budget needs to be higher than 60 dollar since it is gonna take a while to navigate through solid systems with low budget
