I held Monero for a while, but ultimately decided to convert it to bitcoin after some reflection. 

I do not see Monero succeeding for a number of reasons, the foremost of which is mainstream adoption is highly unlikely given popular centralized exchanges for the most part will never list it (though I have been surprised by Kraken (Jesse seems like an interesting dude)).  There are also fewer options in terms of wallet software compared with Bitcoin. 

Although it is being fixed now, the not fully working public view key was another reason I departed, as well as ArticMine just generally talking too much (jk lol, but you know what I mean)).

Are you also leaning away from Monero and into Bitcoin?  I mean, you have been hanging out with Odell more.

I see the value in ownership of decentralized domains names (as opposed to the current centralized system where one leases from a registrar).

I find the features of ENS domains to be on the right track, but the fact there are renewal fees means (in my opinion) you never really own the domain.  Of course it has other problems too [1]. 

So obviously my preference would be something built on top of the bitcoin blockchain because that tech is rock solid.  And I feel like I heard Shinobi make a passing comment in a podcast somewhere this type of system might work on bitcoin. 

I am aware of the unstoppable domains and stacks projects, but my gut tells me those are centralized solutions that may not be successful long term.  I have not seen much technical documentation/discussion on either (please point me in the right direct if there is).  

So are there other bitcoin projects out there attempting this?  Or in the long run are domains names going to become irrelevant for reasons I’m overlooking?

What projects are working on decentralized domains names built on Bitcoin?

At some point you have to trust, for me it begins with the Lightning network

Sorry!  Between being a bad speller and autocorrect I’m a lost cause lol. 

Having been using Bitcoin for many years, I see the value in running a Bitcoin Core node. I am comfortable with this tech. 

However, and perhaps it’s because I’m getting older and loosing my acumen for learning new tech, I cannot envision myself ever running a lightening node as I don’t fully understand what’s happening “under the hood”.  I understand the high level concepts, but doubt I could ever feel safe running a lightening node given that I perceive (from posts on this website) doing so is fraught with peril.  Part of me also doesn’t fundamentally want to learn  because I’ve been “down in the weeds” before learning about on-chain bitcoin, and I just don’t have it in me to do it again with lightning.  I think this is because it’s mentally exhausting to continually “not trust”. 

That the leads me to accept that my personal lightening wallet use will never be fully noncustodial, which is a view I had been resisting but am now growing comfortable with.  And as a result, that same trust will continue upward as the bitcoin tech stack grows (like with chaumian mints, etc).  So like I said in the title, at some point you have to start trusting, for me I’m deciding it’s at the lightning network level.

I love the UX but what are the cons I might be overlooking?
