humans have been faking things well forever. It's called stories. I think this just means we've suddenly gotten a lot better tools for telling stories with videos.

Do you not make the distinction between something that is meant to be perceived as real but is not (fake) and something that is clearly labeled as not real (fiction)?

You're right. I think I do make such a distinction. And yet I think maybe this clear distinction is relatively new in human history. Or at least our firm belief that we can actually tell is a recent phenomenon of the last 100 or less years.
Maybe the new abilities ai gives us will simply move us back to how we have always been: more or less credulous depending on the teller of the story and the story they are telling.
