I have to admit yesterdays White House meeting was much less eventful than I figured it would be. If you had asked me how it would go I would have told you it was set up to be a circus and instead that is not what we got. Even if the meeting was uneventful yesterday was full of action and there was one big take away in my opinion.
The Democrats do not have a clear or clean plan and surprisingly the Republicans are keeping their message simple and clear.
A leak from the Senate side showed that Schumer does not have a clear way out of this. It came out he had approached a group of Senate Dems about voting for a 7 or 10 day CR with the caveat that Trump agree to Obamacare subsidiary negotiations. Not only did this leak before they announced it to the public but it leaked before the meeting with Republican Leaders and the President and was received so poorly that Schumer completely abandoned the idea.
During the meeting with Republicans Leaders and the President both Schumer and Jeffries unveiled a huge list of things that they demand to keep the government open. Most of this list from what I have seen is stuff that has been talking points like making the Obamacare tax credits permeant while also reigning in the Executive Branches rescission abilities among others. If they had one or two then maybe the meeting would have been able to go somewhere but because it was a list of grievances well they essentially ended the idea of negotiating.
When you add in the reports that came out from the House Democrat Caucus meeting earlier in the day and the yelling that was heard from the most Progressive Members saying "hell no" to options its clear that the House Democrats are not coming to any sort of plan either. If their goal is to get something extra besides a clean CR passed then they are going to have to join en mass to the vote to offset the guaranteed Republican vote loss.
On the other side Republicans were able to leave the White House meeting agreeing that things like healthcare in America was broken and through legislation needs to be passed to fix critical issues including the Obamacare tax credits. It was not realistic though to do it now and rushing legislation never leads to good results. The tax credits also dont expire till the first of 2026 so there is plenty of time.
Republicans are surprisingly in a good spot and their arguments are easy and clear for voters to understand. This funding wont change anything it will allow funding to continue to flow as previously agreed to by both sides and the Democrats are willing to shut it down. When you factor in the furlough people who might not get back pay and could end up being fired if the Office of Management and Budget get there way it only makes the idea of closing the government even worse and the repercussions for people you claim to care about further fall to the wayside.
If this shutdown goes into effect this will be the first time the Government has FULLY shut down since 2013 (it lasted 16 days) in 2018 the longest shutdown took place but multiple parts of the government were funded (legislative branch, Pentagon, Department of Commerce) while the National Park Service, Federal Bureau of Prisons, NASA, and the White House were not paid or in the case of NASA only 4% of the workforce continued working and 25% of the White House.
I am planning to write a part two this afternoon over what has played out today this one was more of the last 24-28 hours.
You’ll be shocked to hear that my coworkers understand this as “Democrats try do good thing. Republicans big meanies.”

Those darn Republicans are always causing trouble
reply
I mean, they are, but that doesn’t make Democrats any less dumb.

I mean most of the trouble causing stuff dies as soon as it is introduced. Even if it clears a chamber it'll die in the other one. Currently I would argue Republicans are in a "fix the broken unlaying shit phase" because the Dems threw a bunch of money at stuff and it turns out that does not work....

It’s a pretty big tent. I’m sure there’s room for both.

Honestly I hope you’re right but as it looks right now…. That’s just not the case.
Both sides do not want “their” landmark achievements touched. So CHIPS and Science, BIL, OBBB, etc. are “untouchable”

After Covid, I do not understand why Obamacare is even a vague consideration for anyone. The health care industry is untrustworthy and unreliable and will, it seems, given the right levers, pull the ones that will kill you without thinking a second thought about it. It is rotten and needs to go, and if it takes shutting down the government to do that, don't just shut it down—burn it down.

Getting deemed "essential" is more of a curse than a blessing for the Congressional staffers because welp we are legally entitled to backpay even if we are furloughed and if we are essential we are not allowed to take any sort of time off even if we are sick.
reply
How that that latter part work in practice? Like, I get them saying, "no, you can't take a sick day for your dentist appt," but if you say, "I'm in the ER where they're trying to re-attach my severed arm," do you actually get in trouble?

To be honest I have no idea.... I figure medical emergencies they kinda are forced legally to let you but otherwise it seems like and I could be wrong that you might have to cancel a dr appointment. I feel like most of this is really aimed at people traveling and stopping that and I am sure most offices are flexible with stuff like Dr. appointments but yeah otherwise ya kinda gotta cancel everything....

These are both fantastic resources! Something that has been rumored is this one could possibly affect the stock markets while previous ones have not.
reply
Why could it affect the markets? Do companies' profits/losses depend on the government?

Do you still have to work if the government is shutdown?

Yeppp I was a cursed person deemed essential... Its supposed to be a positive but the sad fact of the matter is it sucks and is a negative.
reply
Hopefully this gets us closer to that 1M number in terms of federal employee layoffs/resignations
reply
Well it will be very very interesting as we will get the official numbers of the resignation people. Right now I mean I havent seen any concrete numbers but since this is the last day before those people roll off the payroll the numbers will come out clear.
reply
If Democrats want more than a clean CR they have to roll in with unity and timing. Right now they have neither...
reply
Annual circus. I remember 2018. They will reluctantly raise the debt ceiling again...
reply
Oh this one isn’t even over the debt ceiling! God that one’s going to be even worse this is just to fund ourselves 😂
reply
why can't they fund with more debt per usual?
reply

They can they just are not allowing themselves to continue spending.... its as dumb as it sounds.... the money/funds exist and are there but Democrats want changes that will increase the cost and cause a whole new bill to be introduced and passed. That process alone will send the government into shutdown due to the amount of time required.

Is anything fundamentally different this time than 2018/2019?
reply
Yeah this one is the entire government the 2018/2019 parts of the government were funded so it was considered a “partial” shutdown this is the whole thing
