How university radicalization happens:
  • University-wide AI task force
  • Small minority complains about environmental sustainability and racism in AI
  • Rest of committee doesn't want to talk about that, but leaders don't want to say this is an irrelevant topic for this group
  • Leaders create a separate "community of interest" for the topic
  • Fringe complainers join that community, no moderate people join, that group becomes more fringe
It stems from leaders being too shy to shut down conversations that are not relevant to the university. Even if you believe that AI has environmental sustainability issues, I don't see what one university can do about it
Curious to get @Undisciplined and @south_korea_ln's view on it, given your academic backgrounds

I don't recall this dynamic on any topic of substance. Either an unimportant issue was completely hijacked by this kind of foolishness or we more or less stayed on topic.
I was mostly on committees comprised of STEM faculty, though.
reply
Yeah, I never really encountered this at department/college level committees, mostly composed of people with econ backgrounds. First time encountering it is on the university-wide committees.
reply
The closest I've been to that was grad student senate, but obviously nothing of any importance was discussed there.

Spineless non-leadership is not exclusive to academia.
reply
After getting tenure, I started sitting on some university-wide committees, so I started getting exposed to different faculty from other disciplines. I really think some of these disciplines just training professional complainers.

Can they really be divided into disciplines generally though?
reply
Actually yes. Extremely high degree of correlation, strong predictive power. Traditional departments, i.e. departments that would have existed 100 years ago, are generally not like that. You can probably guess which departments are.

Interesting. In business we generally find them everywhere
reply
Probably because academic departments are extremely sorted samples of people, applying strong filters on interests and personality.

Is that a function of hierarchy? I have friends in the EU complaining that if you're not supporting the school of thought of senior "leadership" in your institute, you have no chance.

I am handling all sort of paperwork after my father passed away. To keep it super short: some banks are user friendly and some banks are not. They act like my dads account is the national treasury... I mean, I can access the account via the app... I really cannot understand why some employees act like the bank they work for is their property? :)) My money is paying for their salary at the end of the day... And most important thing of all time: Fiat is still fiat. Keep stacking everyone!

My money is paying for their salary at the end of the day...
  • it is not ur money
  • there is no money
  • it is not money
for the left-brained, one of Robert Breedlove's definitions is my favorite: "attention-allocation technology;" i take it a step further - "allegiance tokens:" makes one think who is the master of money; ultimately, it's the "one-mind" or "mind's one eye (mono-eye)" - the money is in the mind; the closer one can get with the idea of "money" to the "one-mind" the more sovereignty (knowledge of the self) or archony (master-slave relationship);

you got my point. as I said: fiat is fiat.

I have been trying to cancel a credit card for over an hour and I still haven't been able to do it through the bank's app, because they don't have a button that says cancel card, you talk to a crappy chatbot that asks you meaningless questions, you call and another chatbot comes up, you have to spend over 10 minutes waiting for a human to answer you, and when they answer you the call drops... my blood pressure must have already gone up.
reply
Ah yes, nightmare cancellation stories. Planet Fitness in America is getting sued for making it hard for their customers to cancel. I wonder if eventually there will be some law or standard in terms of making cancellation straightforward.
reply
Almost three hours of stupid questions and delays talking to a chatbot... but thank God I finally got it.
reply
can't cancel it? max it out and forget it (as well as ur legal persona), the company will cancel it within a couple months for u; these credit cards are toys for children;
reply
They charge you an annual fee to have it, it's a platinum card
reply
sounds like the platinum users are not a priority! u can write a letter requiring compensation for a waste of ur time and anxiety caused over a failed payment;
reply
And I managed to cancel the card....
reply
It's funny, because you're supposedly better than a "Gold", and you have quite a few benefits, not as much as a Black, but the service is crap, I'm still trying to cancel it... I'm already going for 2+ hours
reply
Send them this video
You don't have to cancel it... just withdraw all the money from that bank account, buy BTC and never contact them again.
reply

I'm getting rid of them, I'm giving them to my son to play with, I'm just leaving the one in the bank where my salary comes in.
reply
they "charge" if you pay...
or, send them back a promissory note. Every time you get a mailletter from them send them back another promissory note.
Or just ask them to prove from where they had those money in the first place. if they cannot prove it, it means they gave you fake money that they do not have it.

But I want to check in to see how much has changed
Amazing to see how most of people are so dumb and brainwashed. When they see a SN territory with the name "crypto" (https://stacker.news/~crypto/) they immediately think is about shitcoins and crap and post all kind of bullshit "news" about shitcoins. Even that is specifically mentioned in the territory description that is NOT about shitcoins but cryptography and such.
LOL this world is sooo fucked up.
reply
42 sats \ 13 replies \ @ek 23h
Let them post about shitcoins and crap, more sats for me (literally).
When we can configure fees per user, I will raise the fee for shitcoiners.
reply
I'm curious how the fees per user will appear. Will they see territory fee + user fee separately or will the territory fee appear different for each user?
reply
42 sats \ 3 replies \ @ek 16h
Still up for debate but I’m leaning towards showing them separately in the fee info.
I’m also thinking about “negative fees” here, so discounts for someone to post. These should definitely be shown separately IMO.
reply
This is going to open up a whole can of worms

I mean it in a purely descriptive way.

can this territory be changed to "cryptography"? this wud cover shitcoins, encryption, privacy, etc.
reply

No and you asking this makes me think you also didn’t read the description
reply
thank u, i see it now, hovering over the territory title; nope, the disclaimer does not solve the problem ))
reply
10 sats \ 1 reply \ @ek 21h
You can also read it here:
Sorry if that wasn’t clear
reply
that button is like...
reply
I would say that shitcoins do not belong in ~cryptography because they do not contribute in any relevant way to our knowledge or application of cryptography. THey just copied bitcoin's cryptographic scheme and call it "crypto", but it is really just casinos and memes
reply
10 sats \ 1 reply \ @DarthCoin 22h
No, I do not think that will change anything. My observation was not about the territory per se, but about the shitcoiners mindset. We need to change their mindset not the territory.
