Telegram is not end-to-end encrypted. It is only encrypted between the user and the central Telegram server, which is in Russia, of all places. It is almost certainly compromised by the Russian state.
We have NOSTR now, and no longer require a centralized service like Telegram. Please move on, people.
People don't case about privacy. I like to believe one reason bitcoiners still using it, is because LNp2pbot and similars.

If you link the account to a non-KYC sim card, always use VPN and don't post any identifying info it should be pseudonymous enough. For really private comms start secret chat or switch to SimpleX.

Anonymity is a different subject than privacy. If you are sharing sensitive info with another person, info you don't want to be public or in the hands of potentially nefarious actors, then what you need is privacy. Things like wallet addresses and LIghtning channel info, for example, may only be intended for a particular person. Telegram should not be used. Signal is a better choice. NOSTR of course. SimpleX looks cool!

Private means YOU do not post anything that is private on a public network. All internet is a public network so treat it as such.
Screaming out loud that you do not have privacy on Telegram is like running naked in a public square and scream that you do not have privacy and people should not take photos with you naked.
If you want to run naked, then do it in your own home.

Yes. Telegram's secret chat is private e2ee.

A while back I tried starting an account with a non KYC phone number. Couldn't get it to work after trying for quite some time, Telegram always rejected it.

Interesting. Maybe you used one of those free sms web sites? I bought a physical sim card in a third world country years ago, lost the number already, but Telegram still works with it.
reply
Yes, that's what I did, but they weren't even free. I used lightning to pay for them. It was a while back and can't remember the details of which service I used, but I tried pretty hard, and was never successful - telegram always rejected the numbers.

Yeah, I tried those too for AWS, also did not work. Must be all blacklisted.

I really don't give a shit. E2E encryption is a total buzzword. Follow the simple rule: if you do not want some information to be known WHY do you post it on internet ? Always keep your private life separate from online presence. If you join to a PUBLIC group on Telegram is stupid to think that everything you post there is private. Same happen with nostr, if I post something on nostr, even on a private chat, I do not expect to be private, only if I use my own relay only.
So all this hate against Telegram is not necessary and dumb.
reply
End-to-end encryption is not a "buzzword". It means the communication between you and someone else is encrypted. If you're only posting on public forums or channels, sure, then interception doesn't matter because the information is public anyway. However if you are using the DM feature to chat with another person, then you are not in fact "direct" messaging. You are messaging to the Russian government, then it is relayed to your interlocutor, and vice versa.
E2EE is particularly important if you are sharing crypto keys for things like opening Lightning channels, which way too many people are doing with Telegram. It is insecure, please stop. Move off of that wasteland of a platform and on to open source freedom technology.

This is useless. If a group chat is encrypted but inside there are also the "bad guys" they will see what is posted anyways. Anybody in that chat will see it, encrypted or not.
So again, what I said: if you don't want to post something personal don't post it.
I think you do not understand the meaning of the words private and public.
