Here is another push for BIP 177 madness:

I get that designers want Bitcoin to be nice and smooth and well-rounded and easy, but they're forgetting where we come from: bitcoin is a child of the internet, a weird, funky, dangerous place with no guardrails, no single-button Apple design. Bitcoin is ugly.[1] It is the worst possible thing and we should all be thankful for that.

I'm sticking with satoshis.

  1. Reading "Bitcoin is Worse is Better" again I seem to see things that I didn't see before, and it is not quite how I remember it. It's worth having a look if it's been a while since you've enjoyed this particular Gwern piece.

reply

I like the spirit of the sat symbol, but I've never been one to use it. Not really sure why. Maybe it just feels foreign? Do we need a symbol for sats? I don't mind sats or just an s.

reply

We have a symbol for cents (¢), it’s only natural to have one for sats.

It could be said that it faded in fashion but that’s because inflation took away pricing things in cents, I’m sure sats are safe in this regard.

reply

I appreciate that satoshis emerged organically. nobody said this is what we should do from the top down.

I looked into the history of the term once, it's a fun story: #1228467

reply

in fact B is not the unit. sat is the unit.
And msats are like cents

reply

They're breaking the first rule of design in that if something isn't sticking with users don't try forcing it.

sats won. ⚡️ won. organically.

Nobody is forcing it. Any one is free to support an idea. Free speech is key.

You're free to demonstrate that you can't distinguish between forcing something against friction, and coercion.

If I were to build a Bitcoin spending wallet i would use ₿ as the standard denomination.

Any developer or organisation is free to choose. Deal with it.

In 10 years every single bitcoin wallet will have adopted it. It is inevitable.

People will saying that 10 years ago but sure

I remember exactly 0 bitcoin apps having that 10 years.

Today there are more than 9: SQUARE, BITKIT, ALBY, WALLET OF SATOSHI, LEXE WALLET, BLITZ, CASHU, AGICASH, STASH PAY, MANNA WALLET

In any case it is inevitable, as the bitcoin price goes up and nobody has ₿1 and the zero decimals keep increasing

reply

Only 1 of those has a material number of users, and is run by an activist with an NGO that constantly attacks Bitcoin... not exactly grassroots adoption.

If 9 use it, then 90 don't.

zero decimals keep increasing

you mean sats.

reply

lol just realized the site linked in the OP is itself Spiral astroturf

Dorier and Mandrik must have not have gotten their NGO bribes this month

Anything Spiral supports should be immediately considered an attack

"sats" is a foreign concept for 95%+ of people who know about bitcoin.

One more stupid needless adoption barrier.

And as we know, there are already many...

coin symbol ftw

Just saw it now and it as close as ecstasy can be 😀

I am a sats maxi.

₿ 1000

reply

1000 Bitcoin. Wow Blok you are rich!

reply

haha

reply

Yup I like the ₿ for Bitcoin and 丰 for sats. of you dont like the 丰 symbol, simply use sats

It does the complete opposite of what they claim, they took a $75,000+ brand icon and turned it into $0.0012 of value.

The the angle is sneaky, Bitcoin is already one of the most successful logos in the history of mankind..

The first attempt wave was "people get confused" So lets change dollars to USD and cents to dollars to make it easy.

reply

B symbol isn’t so bad.

On iOSOn iOS

Go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement

Tap the +

Paste ₿ into the Phrase field.

Enter a shortcut like "bb" in the Shortcut field

On AndroidOn Android

Go to Settings > System > Languages & input > Personal dictionary

Choose your language

Tap the + button

Paste ₿ into the main text field

Add a shortcut like "bb"

reply

I detest it as used for sats.

reply

₿ 2000

new users shouldn't need to learn a new concept to use bitcoin.

Changing the symbol doesn't fix that. They still need to learn about "not your keys, not your coins", even if they decide not to hold their keys.

reply
they're forgetting where we come from

That's intentional. They want to erase Satoshi's name from history and claim Al Gore helped. No one invented it or contributed more than anyone else. No one was early. No one worked harder than anyone else. Bitcoin is for everyone, so give yours to me.
