Should it be compulsory / mandatory for students to play a sport for their school?
Thought: I don’t think that all students should be required to play sports because all of us have diverse interests and passions.
Reason: School should spark our interest in learning. If we all had to play a sport, then we would neither have the time nor the headspace to explore the things that appeal to us.
Example: I understand why some people believe that playing sports is helpful to get children to exercise. This is especially so when we are glued to our mobile devices and dislike working up a sweat. However, I think we should be given the choice to exercise at our own pace.
Experience: Right now, I am in the Science Club. It’s something that I enjoy because I like to complete the Young Scientist Badge tasks and broaden my knowledge. I also play football occasionally with my classmates during recess and before remedial classes. This gives me the best of both worlds as I nurture my interest in Science without compromising my fitness.

I prefer more open, individualized education in general, so I don’t think students should have to play a sport any more than they should have to take art or music.
There are a lot of benefits to being on a team though. It wouldn’t be the worst kids are forced to do for school.
I think children are sorely lacking in communication skills these days because 1) family size getting smaller, 2) more used to offline communications via social media, 3) penchant for slang terms which sound hilarious but don’t carry much meaning, 4) addiction to gaming.
Team sports sound like a good way to boost one’s communication skills
Also good practice at not getting exactly what you want, since you need to negotiate and compromise with your teammates.
And, relatedly, it’s good for developing an appreciation of how people can bring their different abilities together for a single purpose.
It is difficult to decide which activities we should compell our children to do -- some children resist things that feel different or uncomfortable (which most sports do the first time you try them) and there is definitely a role for a parent to provide a push for their children.
I think my answer is yes.
thank you for treating my oral practice question with such seriousness and candidness.
was there a time in which you insisted your children tackle something that didn’t catch their fancy in hopes that their indifference would blossom into affection
I don't think I had hopes that they would get into any particular sport, but I do remember my own experience as a child usually opting out of most things because they seemed uncomfortable, but being happy to have done them in most of the cases where my participation was compelled.
I've forced my kids to do a few things, with mixed results. Most of the time it becomes something they are happy to have done, though.
