Second day on this platform so please take it easy on me, but I see this as a very viable Reddit alternative. This got me thinking, I like discussing Bitcoin as much as the next person, but my typical Reddit experience involves many different topics (sports, music, memes, non-btc tech, etc). I am not suggesting allowing rampant altcoin discussion (unless you can cordon that off from the rest), but having diverse conversation topics may attract no-coiners and a chance to orange-pill them. Has this been discussed before, is there a way to create "sub-reddit", ie "sn/baseball", or are they all individual threads? Thanks, I'd really love to replace all of my reddit scrolling and discussions. I skimmed the Content Guidelines and FAQ, other than saying non-bitcoin topics typically don't get much activity it's not off limits. I think the framework to enable multiple discussion topics, "sub-reddits" is lacking from what I can see, and would love to discuss Bitcoin and other non-financial topics. Anyone else, thoughts?
Any shitcoin related post will get instant flag.

Strangely, I believe I have heard of you before DarthCoin :) or I may have ended up on your substack yesterday, cant recall. Either way, no interest in having shitcoin discussions, but some "non-coin" discussions would be interesting. Then again, perhaps its not my place on my second day to be suggesting changes. I am finally just seeing the potential of Nostr/LN and am eager to replace ad based social media like Reddit/Twitter.

Why would I waste my time with anything that is not bitcoin related?
reply
You don't have any interests other that BTC? Sports, music, other tech, art even (obvious Star Wars reference in username)? Thats fine if true, but I'd imagine you'd be in the minority of people with a singular interest.
reply
99% of my time is used in Bitcoin related. All other personal details are not to discuss on a public forum. Also this is a bitcoin news site, as the title says. Why we should introduce garbage on it? To make readers time to be wasted, browsing between all the garbage until you find out something good about Bitcoin?
If you want to discuss garbage go to the shity reddit.
reply
Thats why reddit has "subs" to keep discussions organized into various topics. If you want all your time on BTC, it would not be hard to make that happen. Isnt true adoption when people are using Bitcoin without actually realizing it. A LN enabled reddit would bring in non-BTC native users, where they can use the network without really fully understanding it, and can be onboarded to full maxis overtime. If the only topic is Bitcoin, you'll never get outside ideas, discussion, or users. Perhaps what you personally want is only the hardcore bitcoin technical discussions, but that can alienate even bitcoin enthusiasts such as myself who feel unable to contribute as well as more technically literate people. It can be intimidating and if there arent discussions that people can and feel able to contribute to, they will inevitably stop using the site. Stacker.News is a bitcoin news site now, but doesnt have to always remain that way and can morph into a more generalized news site powered by the Bitcoin and lightning network spuring further adoption of Bitcoin. Its fine if 99% of your time is Bitcoin, but even on this Bitcoin oriented site you are likely a rare minority.

You are free to fork SN code and create your own thing about any garbage you want. I don't want to waste my time scrolling into endless garbage until I will find something interesting about Bitcoin.

This convo doesnt have to go on any further, but I think you are simply ignoring how "sub reddits" work. If YOU wanted to only see Bitcoin, that is fully within your power. Right now your stance on this is "because I dont want to see other topics, no one else should either. And you should go elsewhere". I see value in a singular place where people can discuss various topics, while all contributing/using the Bitcoin and LN. Perhaps there will be more SN forks in the future for other topics and news, but again, that requires technical skills I personally dont have, but also is a relatively clunky experience vs the currently available alternatives such as Reddit. Which again will make it less likely normies come. I think a full LN powered social media, like Twitter or Reddit can be a huge driver of LN adoption if done right, which I would imagine is a goal of Bitcoiners such as yourself. So why fragment userbase and fork vs building on a foundation that is already there. Just my lowly opinion that doesnt really matter.
have you considered our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ?

This is obviously a bitcoin news site. Other topic sections have been discussed in the past. I believe a separate nostr sub forum is the idea that has gotten the most traction.
reply
nostr sub was confirmed by @k00b here: #167858
reply
Wouldn't that result in a poor user experience (compared to say reddit) where a user needs to switch in and out of different sites/tabs for different conversations? I suppose someone could build separate nostr sub forums as suggested, then with a service that allows you to compile all the separate forums into a single visible thread, ala reddit? Is that the thought? So someone can go build Baseball.News, Football.News, etc. I guess I dont like the idea of different sites/forums for each, but perhaps I am just thinking of this incorrectly/have the wrong mental framework right now.

I'm with you. As other commenters have noted, this topic comes up every so often. There's generally interest in economics and finance posts even when they aren't explicitly about Bitcoin.
I've heard that the long term plan is to develop along the lines of Reddit, but obviously with so many fewer users the diversity of topics will be lower.
There are some people on here who are pretty interested in getting lightning network sports betting integration, which would give sports stories a clear Bitcoin angle.
reply
LN sports betting would be excellent. I am sure I will lose many sats, but I welcome that development!
reply
This site has some sports betting, but not for anything I follow. It seems like the regulatory hurdles are pretty high for NBA or NFL betting.
reply
Yeah I've bet a few satoshi there before, but its always only Money Line, ie picking winners. No spread/props/etc. Its fun, but certainly not a sportsbook like experience.

Am not a fan of shitcoin but I on cryptocurrency and bitcoin.... Fanatic
reply
Im in favor of Bitcoin & non Bitcoin stuff for sure .... but certainly NOT only one of them....why?
IF its non Bitcoin only then SN loses its purpose as the vast majority of its members are Bitcoiners
If its Bitcoin only (for someone who has been a Bitcoiner for quite some time) then it can be just another eco chamber discussion

posts like this is what excites me!
reply
Think its a great idea :)

Honestly I've seen good posts garner enough attention which are unrelated to bitcoin / nostr / privacy / etc., but definitely a minority.
On the other hand the daily discussion thread is a great place to read and ask r about random stuff. You can post often with different wording and it might bring in some attention. There's a guy building a wooden house who posts often and it's a treat to see his progress.
Edit: welcome to SN! Sats are love
reply
Thanks for the Sats! I will check out the daily discussions. If there are other nostr/LN based forums for other topics similar to stacker.news, I suppose that would be something I'd check out. I would just love a true "reddit" like experience without ads/mod controls, where the switching between conversations/topics is relatively seamless.
reply
I only check SN nowadays, and the account "clown world today" on Twitter to get my weekly dose of memes (aka highly accurate news).
There's even a guy/bot posting interesting stories from HN, so I don't check HN anymore.
reply
I try to visit Stacker just to see what's going on with crypto, but it's less Reddit and more similar to other single topic sites (which I hate to mention because they've banned me; so fuck you YCombinator/Wackernews and Lobsters!)
There were some single topic ink aggregation sites like narwhale (for writers) but of course that's not going to last. On the Fediverse there are Lemmy instances that you might be interested in, but honestly, just get on the fediverse via Pleroma/Mastodon/Misskey. That's where everything is at .. there or Nostr.
