After having used services, such as lnvpn.net, sms4sats.com, or nostr.wine, I was amazed by the convenience these services bring.

A premium Nostr relays could of course be paid via a regular subscription. However, being able to receive a single SMS or access a VPN for a mere hour feels amazing to me.

What services would feel amazing to use via a Pay-Per-Use model? 1000 sats to the best answer!

(PS: Please don't say video-streaming 🙊)

1,000 sats paid
felix's bounties

I definitely think paying to consume content without a damn pay wall would be awesome people load up their wallet and as they read its just seamlessly streaming sats to the publication

I would also like to see subscription services for APIs, if I wanted to get data from let's say Twitter or LinkedIn, I just want to pay for the data I request.

reply

Pay-per-use SaaS subscriptions would be awesome. I see quite the case here.

Difficult to commercialize though, as it goes against most SaaS T&Cs.

We enable publications to add this with no-code at Mash (mash.com) – and a bunch more related for engaging users coming live shortly. Happy to get time to share a demo, learn what features you would properly care if you're curious. Helps us build the right things the more we hear from folks.

reply

How much would you pay and how would you like to pay it? X sats for Y calls? Another scheme?

reply

I think you could do both and incentivize group call buys, setting X sets per call and then lets say 10 000 calls you reduce the per API cost, so you don't push away anyone but incentives are there for bigger projects to scale

Obviously, the service provider would need to work out the cost based on their servers and stuff.

Like for me i use Supermetrics a lot for my clients and the pricing structure is so rigid it makes reporting so expensive, and I think costs can really be driven down with Bitcoin

Microservices! For instance "photo background removal tool" webapps, they either try to push you to a card payment, or to leave your e-mail and/or bombard you with ads.

And no I will not buy Photoshop just for that. That said, pay per use Photoshop would be great, too.

reply

That's what I'm thinking; Microservices!

However, what does that actually mean? Focus on shitty webapps? Could work!

reply

I would focus on improving the most frustrating tools, when you think "I should be getting this shit done in 2 seconds and it's taking me 2 hours". The image webapp was just an example that happened to me recently

reply

I would add that for many of these tools the blockers are: creating an account, adding a card (and especially the time to consider whether to subscribe or not to the regular SaaS), navigating through stupid ads, evalutate if it's worth giving them your e-mail, etc. Both LN payments and/or LNURL-Auth can make things way better. No BS, just value for value

reply

would really like to pay 500 sats to read an article instead of having to have some stupid subscription.

reply

Next time you hit a paywall, share the link and offer 500 sats for the text on Nostr. Maybe there'll arise a hashtag for this

reply

This worked today for me on Nostr. Took 4hrs but a random came through with an archive link! TYSM web2-enjoyer!

reply

Is this so much to ask?? Good things behind paywalls are still not payable with LN

You can try this site https://12ft.io/

You can actually get paid sats to read articles from the Bitcoin magazine app

I'am a simple man. I'd love to pay for food, fuel and haircuts with my sats :)

I would like to see implemented this wonderful solution based on LNbits Bitcoin switch: https://nitter.net/BitcoinMemeHub/status/1653143550987575298

  • on a live TV show
  • politicians invited to answer questions
  • for each wrong answer or lie, they get electrocuted
  • viewers could "pay to shock" them with sats.

Soon you will not see anymore politicians lying or even being politicians.

reply

I'd pay them to shut the hell up.

reply

Just turn them off and pay yourself

reply

I love the idea of pay per use VPN. Maybe pay per use nodes or mining so if your short you can still use

reply

There are VPNs you can pay for with lightning!

With lnvpn, you can get down to a single hour's worth of VPN access https://lnvpn.com/

Mullvad supports on-chain bitcoin as well, and this site allows you to top-up mullvad with lightning. The lowest they go is 1 month though, so not as "pay per use" as lnvpn.

In response to @falseFaucet PayWall solution, I'd indeed prefer to see open-communication and transparent information... made possible {maybe} with websites/tools' pre-authorization to charge sats based in info/data consumption

{maybe} on #nostr?

Honestly, pretty much anything AI as it stands.

I'd of course much rather pay nothing, and I assume we're not too far from being able to have our own locally run AIs that are trained from our own datasets..

But I assume there will be highly specialized AIs that I would rather pay exactly what I use instead of a monthly fee with a usage cap.

a few ideas off the top of my head…

  • public washrooms in cities
  • parking in cities billed by the minute (the fiat versions of this idea aren’t very good, typically requiring you to either load a parking “wallet” with $25 or incur a $3 minimum fee)
  • professional photos at tourist attractions
  • expensive SaaS tools (that would otherwise be $50+/month)

Real time auto insurance via an OBD2 dongle. If the car is on, you're streaming sats to the insurance company. Basically, micro-policies for every trip.

I would gladly pay-per-search, for example when using KAGI.

Pay-per-golf-ball at the driving range, swings for satoshis

Maybe the driving range operator could also pay out bounties for hitting it close to the pin, possibly would require some near field communication technology which is not my area of expertise

Food. Transport. Housing.

So basically Uber, Airbnb and UberEats clones taking sats, with LN login and replacing reputation with LN security deposits would be amazing.

Bitrefill is already super useful by letting you buy Uber & Airbnb gift vouchers... but it would be even better to have a lightning native app.

(PS: Please don't say video-streaming 🙊)

But it is video streaming. Piracy almost died when Netflix dominated the market - now piracy is coming back due to low convenience of market segmentation.

People would love paying 50% subscription to one service and 50% to another service depending on use

It's also one of the top industries that need this more direct free market competition

Using Sats to Reduce spam on email, sms, and voice calls. Something like vida but more wide spread.

Sex. Definitely sex.

But also, reading news articles instead of a paywall is a big one. If media companies had a viable economic model other than arbitraging our limited supply of attention for ad revenue, we'd all be better-informed, less stressed, and less resentful of our neighbors.

Strong agree.

Conversely, I'd like to see LN integrated into ATSC 3.0 and receive sats for watching an ad supported broadcast. And then maybe I could zap my local PBS station some sats when they run their on-air pledge drive.
