I've been here for a month now (give or take a few days), and I figured it's a good time to look back on the experience.
The Good:
  1. I have spent a very long time hating social media. It started out as a great idea and it ended up turning the internet into a trash heap. SN has created something I enjoy participating in personally, and is a proof-of-concept for a better economic model for the internet more generally.
  2. I have been hodling bitcoin for quite a few years, but I was never interested in the day-to-day of it. I quickly saw the potential, but it was at a time where most people saw the potential for quick profits from speculation, so I figured I'd take a closer look in a few years. I'm happy I did - I have interacted with some very knowledgeable people here and learned a ton.
  3. The toxic bitcoin maximalists. Why is toxicity good? Well, it isn't, but I like platforms that avoid infringing on freedom of speech. It is the foundation of a strong and free society, even at the price of hurt feelings.
The Bad:
  1. The toxic bitcoin maximalists. I wouldn't be surprised if some n00bs got scared away from here by people yelling at them for owning shitcoins. I used to own shitcoins too. Nobody shamed me out of shitcoinery though. I stopped because I had a patient friend who explained why bitcoin is better using reason and logic, not the quasi-religious arguments some bitcoiners employ.
The Ugly:
  1. (Well this isn't really ugly per se, but I had to complete the trio). The folks here have built a really cool community. I think it has potential, but I worry about its sustainability. I've stacked a lot of sats here, but where are those coming from? If people are signing up and funding their own wallets, then great, but if they're being injected into the local economy by SN from money they raised by VC, how does that scale? The incentive model employed here is superior and I have no doubt that it will be the norm in 20 years, but I do get the feeling that something is missing from the economic model for the time being. I hope I'm wrong though, it would be great to have this place around for the long-term.
The economic model is worth thinking about. I'm sure the VCs have thought this through. The sats we're throwing around to each other don't represent a lot of real world buying power right now, but I think that will change.
@k00b's idea to "sell" personal subs that can be run as a business is probably part of the plan.

Well, I'm looking at Reddit. They should be a profitable company. The fiat world has a way of suppressing good things and inflating crap.

Can you provide an example of the toxicity you've seen? I read SN daily and I've never encountered anything like you're describing.
reply
No way. If you haven't noticed, great! In any case, it was partly tongue-in-cheek. People should have thicker skin, it's better for their mental health. I have seen n00bs get shit for shitcoinery. I just don't think it's very helpful to anyone.

As a “n00b” to Stacker News, and Social Media in general thanks for this.
My background is different than yours but I’m interested in seeing where I’m at in a month ish.

Welcome! Enjoy the community, it's a lot of fun. If you do decide to worship false gods (shitcoins) make sure Darth doesn't find out about it.

At the moment I didn't use my own Bitcoin yet, but I try to get used to it. Totally agree the model is good and it makes us used to Lightning. And it creates a reason for me to keep paying $10 on Voltage.

The toxic bitcoin maximalists. Why is toxicity good? Well, it isn't,
That means you didn't reach that level of knowledge in Bitcoin. You are still mumbling around shitcoins. For more you learn about Bitcoin, more toxic you will became.
reply
No offense @DarthCoin but you're not as toxic as you think. I had a different stacker in mind when I wrote that.
reply
99% of people, me included, assumed you meant DarthCoin when you said that in the OP. And inwardly we laughed and thought, "He just doesn't know Darth's charm yet."
But if you say you didn't have him in mind... now we're all curious 👀
reply
I'm with Darth on the proof of work thing. I can't just give it away. Anyway, I don't like calling individuals out, it's un-dudelike.
reply
Why do you think I will get offended? Only shitcoiners get offended of anything.
reply
Is it me?
It's me, isn't it?
reply
ok, who is the winner, then... :)
