I had the best wake-up this morning. My second laptop runs a VM with a web server in it, and the laptop is also bridging the fast 5ghz wifi back to my work space, which is on the borderline of useless for 5ghz due to walls and whatnot.
Neither the device's network connection, and therefore nothing else connected to it was relaying traffic, nasty question mark on all devices wired through it.
My conclusion was that the braniacs at Virgin UK internet decided that I must be serving a website, never mind that almost nothing was going to it. It had port 22 open with certificate only access, and of course as any sysadmin will know, that usually also means a constant droning baseline of bots trying all the common passwords and getting banned by fail2ban.
And very likely the actual traffic volume it was bringing inbound was tiny and very infrequently of any amount of serious volume, and the uploads also. Who knows, maybe someone put a site scraper on it and this activity is how they noticed it, would have been visible as a very high upstream utilisation for a time.
300mbit down, 30mbit up on this line.
I so miss my bulgarian internet connections. 100mbit optic fibre no muss no fuss, 99.5% uptime, you could run a 99.99% uptime system just by getting three different and differently backbone-connected services there.
But here. Yeah, 10x down as up. And the guy who pays for it says he often has problems especially when he is trying to upload his own data to offsite storage if it uses UDP, but even sometimes with TCP running the connections.
I think time is coming to depart this Ministry of Truth internet. It's probably starting to get like Ireland now, some day soon I will wake up and suddenly I won't be able to get my protonmail, same shit as happened when I landed in Dublin.
Welcome to Frickin Ireland. Here you have to tell us, even though you can actually just make up shit, where you are going to stay, even though the pandemic is long over. And some obnoxious, entitled POC who is hated, almost openly by his peers, tries to provoke a half asleep international traveller into seeming "disorderly" so he could get thugs to put me in a box.
Oh, want to check your email? Nope.
I got it working by installing proton VPN and connecting it up, but honestly, if you MUST have a VPN to use the actual internet somewhere, you might need to reconsider the safety of your situation.
Side note: I may look white but I'm only 2 generations distant from fully dark skinned indonesian from the region near the border of PNG. Refugees they were. My father was constantly harassed by peers in school to the point he had to sock a few of them out in the end as they kept it up and wouldn't leave him alone. And it's not hard to see how he looks a lot like a "half caste" aboriginal.

I know Node.js gets a lot of hate, but I'm really digging it lately

Finally got a testnet Bitcoin node online, anyone else also run a testnet node? If you have the spare hardware I think you should run a testnet node.
reply
any particular reason? i run a full node, but never considered running a testnet node. my next step would probably be a lightning node if anything
reply
testnet is really useful for the network in general and without people providing nodes it wouldn't work. For personal reasons, if you ever want to test a new wallet you can test it using the testnet with your own node to increase privacy.
I don't have anything against running a lightning node either, however running a testnet Bitcoin node is much cheaper and simpler.

I think I've got a condition called Mal de Debarquement Syndrome, Nearly constant stomach ache, and some dizziness after/during movement. Sometimes vomiting. Eh. Here's hoping it passes soon.
reply
Not sure about the stomach, but dizziness is horrible. Hang in there.
reply
the dizziness has mostly subsided, but my stomach won't settle :(

Hello from Shanghai. I have been visiting for the past week and have also visited in the past (5+ years ago). I must say, it is both an impressive but also scary place. Being here has made me reflect a lot on the future, specifically what a 'technological dystopia' would look like
reply
I fell in love with Shanghai when I visited there some years ago. I wonder how much it has changed.

Is it enough to use Bitcoin or do you have to understand it as well?
reply
My instinct is to respond that bitcoin is just money. No need to think about it, just use it. And yet, here we all are, talking about it endlessly.
reply
I’m not here everyday. Maybe you just need a break
reply
I can really appreciate that sentiment. Perhaps one of the issues with money is that it wasn’t talked about enough and we remained ignorant and exploited giving others an advantage over us.
