A moment was a medieval unit of time. So when you say just a moment please, you're telling the other person that you need an average of 90 seconds.
A jiffy is a unit of time as well!
The lateralization ("difference in behavior") of mammalian brain hemispheres varies, is high in birds, low in cats, but is extreme in humans.
Our two hemispheres do not see the same. Generally, the right hemisphere accepts signals from both left and right senses, but the left hemisphere actively pretends that one side is irrelevant. Due to neuronal fiber crossing, the left hemisphere controls the right side of our body and vice versa. And in the middle junction of our brain, the corpus callosum, the left hemisphere ALMOST ONLY sends inhibitory signalsâ "Shut up I don't want to hear what you're talking about shut up! I already know the truth!".
In patients who have brain injuries only in their right hemispheres, this results in incredibly bizarre behavior:
This is only true if you damage the right hemisphere: If the damage was on the left side, you'd be a (nearly) fully functioning person.
The great thinker Iain McGilchrist (great vids, but I recommend his book Master & His Emissary for the full picture) has studied this laterealization in many other species.
He argues that the reason we have these two VERY SEPARATE systems of perception ("ways of handling reality") is because animals need to solve a very specific problem. We need to hunt, which requires "DETAILED FOCUS", at the same time that we need to not be killed by predators, which requires "BROAD CONTEXTUAL AWARENESS".
The behavior is completely apparent in birds; They actually turn their head and use the other eye depending on if they're trying to look at a predator or prey.
To quote the man, who by the way also believes that our society has veered off course and begun letting our leftern hemispheres dominate too much:
Wonder if this has anything to do with the ability of human beings to not understand/apprehend things that are not to their advantage. For instance, owners and workers at steel mills will argue convincingly (and will themselves believe) that tariffs on steel imports are very important.
"It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.â â Upton Sinclair
I don't know anything about steel tariffs, trying to make sense of this. A tariff is a tax on importing? and both workers and owners of steel processing places, places that buy steel and process it and sell it, they WANT TARIFFS???? Seriously this is the craziest thing I've heard in a long while, I'll give 2k sats to anyone who can explain it even a little!
Are they just patriotic and believe in supporting local mines?
Yep, they want tariffs. Say US steel producers (producers, not consumers) can sell steel to companies that make products which need steel (like appliances and cars), for $100 a ton. Companies in Asia may have lower costs, and can sell the same steel for $50 a ton.
But if the companies in Asia are hit by a $75 per ton tariff, they can't make a profit. So the US producers - both owners and workers - win. And consumers pay more.
Here's some more details: https://taxfoundation.org/research/all/federal/section-232-tariffs-steel-aluminum/
I forgot about the part where people working at steel CONSUMING business lose their jobs.
Fascinating. Thank you!
Thanks for the zap! BTW can anyone explain why on some zaps I earn what seems like 90%, but on others, it appears to be 25%? Is that written up somewhere?

Swan Bitcoin custodies with Ripple
meaningless. It's suppose that you buy from swan and withdraw to your own wallet, so how that is affecting you? It's even better: you are dumping all worthless fiat into ripple hands...
Why people make so much case for this? Swan is just a broker to GIVE you sats not to take them. You are the one dumping shit fiat on them.
It's a combination of factors. You're not wrong.
When there's a case to be made for better options, often it's just easier to shit on bad solutions to steer people away. It's not just about what is best, but what not to do.
Swan is a good example of what not to do on so many levels.
What did Swan in this case? They just custody THEIR funds with Fortress, that is a 3rd party company (not theirs) and was bought by another company. Swan have nothing in that deal.
I don't see anything wrong doing by swan in this deal. And I do not see swan users affected in any way. Users just buy BTC from Swan and withdraw, Nothing burger. No custody, no scam no nothing.
On the other side yes, Ripple can fuck Swan now if they want. Maybe that was also their plan with this acquisition. Ripple are fucking evil and they are capable of many bad things.
Disclaimer: I do not use Swan and I do not endorse them in any way. I am just an objective observer.
the ownership of that custodian is besides the point. what really matters imo is swan is using a 3rd party custodian at all, and is a custodial platform. Neither of these are ideal.
last I checked, there's limits of up to 2 weeks on withdrawals with swan?
they could be in the long run via a rug pull. trusted 3rd parties are securities holes.
oh 2 weeks to withdraw? WTF! This is bad. It should not be such thing.

Agriculture was first developed by ants. There are ants that cultivate a type of fungus that grows on leaves that the ants cut and move to their colony. This fungus was domesticated by these ants, and can no longer exist outside of an ant colony. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atta_(ant)
Ants man. Humans and ants, we are the kings of earth. And why? Because we both learned how to sustain huge flocks, overcoming tribal instability.
Ants do it by being siblings/family (like most flocks do, wolves for instance). Humans do it (and conquered Neanderthals and all others) by being the first to evolve the ability to lie. We can pretend to be family (through religion, nationality) and thus sustain flocks (pseudofamilies) no Neanderthal family can beat.
There are dark sides to flocks though, that are often overlooked. A bird that tweets at night is eaten by the owl, it's whole family is eaten. So flocks learn to kill the weak. Ants do it extremely well, birds kick out smaller babies.
I'm my country of Sweden we have a very strong pseudofamily, so strong we donate money to strangers through welfare. But we also kill the weak. Not long ago we forcibly sterilized ones deemed unsocial or stupid. Today we kill the drug addicts, punish and let them die (greatest mortality in the west) and we all don't care. Because it's needed, for the sake of the family.
This is why so many were upset (and Swedish politics took a sharp right turn) when we suddenly accepted great amounts of immigrants. Because we who know, we know that when it gets cold, swedes kill the weakest. So immigration is not compassionate.
