Last week we had a great discussion surrounding music from our own countries. And a big thank you to @nemo for holding down the fort for me whilst I was out of signal up a mountain somewhere. I appreciate you stepping up and keeping the conversation flowing.
I'm hoping to hear about bands from someone else's country you really like, whether you understand what they're saying or not, what I'm looking for is bands that are not in your native language. "Good music is good music" - Henk Port, and I couldn't say it better.
Today my submission for a foreign (to me) band is going to be: Feuerschwanz - Das Elfte Gebot
I'm looking forward to hearing your suggestions.
Let's go!
Mafikizolo - Love Potion
Some African language with quite a bit of English thrown in. Just such a good vibe song.
reply
I loved the work the costume department did here. Amazing colour all over the place which compliments the energy of the African dancing.
I'm getting a few African tracks from you over the weeks and I am grateful, they've always been just really good to listen to with a great vibe. I did think it was funny that at the beginning of the music video they showed an image of what I thought was Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria. Beautiful castle. I've seen it before in the music video to Blind and Frozen by Beast in Black (
) very recognisable and wasn't expecting to hear African music set at a Bavarian castle.

Never a fan of French rock, but this got me:
reply
Nice one sigs, iconic track, at least over here in ... urm... not America ;) been used a lot in advertising.
reply
Really? It was very popular in the U..S. when it came out. I hadn't heard it in years.
reply
I think it might have been Citroen that uses it in their adds in Europe. But it was quite big.

Carmina Burana: O Fortuna by Carl Orf
A particularly emotive piece used in so many films etc. And medieval European languages are decidedly foreign to me…
reply
Always liked Carmina Burana, it's so epic. Really portrays grandeur and and sense of urgency.
If you like that have you heard of Nightwish? I can't remember if I mentioned it to you before but I'm sure I mentioned ghost love score
to someone last week. But ghost love score has some very Carmina Burana-esq elements in it that make it quite an epic piece of music.
reply
Love ‘Ghost Love Score’.
We have chatted about Nightwish we talked about when I saw them on their last tour supported by Beast in Black.
Glad you made it back from the land of haggis and midges. And if you ever doubt the madness AND bravery of a Scotsman remember that one landed on the Normandy Beaches in WW2 to retake Europe wearing a kilt and playing the bagpipes…
reply
Yes it was you I was talking with about it! Midges musta gotten to my brain my memory is all over the place.
Indeed they are crazy up there. There's something really imposing about seeing people in kilts and playing pipes.
If you like the sound of pipes have you tried Triddana - Dare to Tame Me (
) Argentinians playing Celtic inspired metal. Really cool band.
reply
That’s really cool - can feel myself down a musical rabbit hole. That may even edge out the Badpiper’s version of Thunderstruck as my favourite bagpipe tune…
reply
The guy with the fire blowing out the pipes in the streets of Edinburgh?? (Might not have been Edinburgh) he was excellent, really good fun. But yeah Triddana have some excellent tracks.
reply
That’s him - I think he is an Aussie by birth though. Mrs Fandango doesn’t like the bagpipes much but she is sort-of-sold on the Uilleann pipes of Troy Donockley so that’s a suitable compromise.
There is a guy from Portland who rides a unicycle dressed as Darth Vader playing the Star Wars theme… but that’s just daft.
reply
I've seen the vadar one and daft is the best description. From pure entertainment factor the guys got something going. But it is indeed daft.
I honestly haven't dug through their library much yet but The Hu, that Mongolian metal band, certainly fits the description.
reply
Absolutely. The Hu are really good. I enjoy their stuff.
reply
reply
I got time for that. Kinda bluesy kinda lounge musicy maybe smooth jazz? I'm not quite sure where to place it, but it was good.
reply
I woul say blues rock jazz fusion if I had to
reply
Sounds like the closest to an accurate description we got haha

Madredeus - O pastor
Madredeus are a Portuguese musical ensemble formed in 1985, in Lisbon. Their music combines traditional Portuguese music, fado and folk music.
reply
I liked that, it was nice to see the flash backs to a sort of traditional dress and then more modern dress. The singer has such a clean and beautiful tone. I had no idea what she was saying but I could listen to her all day. I'm a complete sucker for a fusion of genres, when artists start mixing things together that compliment each other well, I love it.
reply
I am at a loss on this one. I can't even give you a French song.
This is the best I have got for you. Andrea and Matteo Bocelli singing Fall on Me in Italian.
reply
It counts. I'll take it. Had to dig deep but you found something.
reply
Andrea Bocelli is one of the few humans on the planet whose voice I consider ridiculous. I mean, one should not be able to sing like that.
reply
Actually crazy. Can't think of anyone better. There's only been one other singer who's sent shivers down my spine and that was Floor Jansen.
reply
Unfamiliar. You made me get my headphones out on a Monday morning yet again.
reply
See #257236 that's got the link.
reply
Her range is incredible.
reply
Yes. It is madness. There's a TV series in Holland (I think it was Holland) called "Beste Zanger" you can find it on YouTube. It's subtitles are in English. But she appears on that singing with Henk Port amongst others. And it's such a good wholesome show of just musicians appreciating each other.
Listening to Sleeping Sun right now. Will check this out next.
reply
Always liked sleeping sun. Beautiful track.
If you end up down a nightwish rabbit hole. I'm not going to rescue you, I'm taking full responsibility (see also credit) and I hope you enjoy yourself because that band is something very very special.
reply
I found an old live version of Phantom of the Opera. I think it had a different singer but that was really cool.
reply
That was probably their original singer Tarja (yellow dress?) They went their separate ways around 2004ish. Then they had Annette for the album dark passion play, then Floor after that. Tarja and Marko had amazing chemistry for phantom. But Henke Port actually played the phantom in a Dutch production and him and Floor singing it together is just incredible (on Beste Zanger)

Damn man, that's awesome. If you like music that gets into your bones try Pawl.D Beats Viking Music - Blood Revenge (
) there's a whole bunch Pawl.D does, but that's just one example.

I don't speak great Spanish but yeah English is the language of my parents ;) and me. I try to be able to speak enough in a language to kind of get by. But I am by no means fluent in anything.
I did always like that Spanish written is pronounced exactly as it's spelt as opposed to french for example or even English for that matter. Makes reading/speaking Spanish menus/road signs much easier.
