Just woke up from a nightmare.
I was caught outside late during the night and then a slenderman stalked me. He got closer and closer and I knew he wanted miy bitcoins.
To survive, I tried to touch him first. Or did I throw an axe at him?
I don't know, when I touched him weird stuff happened. As if time started to flow backwards ...
Dreams are weird, the feelings you have during a dream feel so real.

Maybe @nemo's warning yesterday did indeed hit home. Now I am getting followed by slendermen in my dreams, lol
And maybe I should have made use of my meme. Should have told him I spent all my sats on SN, lol

The safe strategy is to overestimate people because you're conflicted to believe otherwise. The most obvious tell for a weak ego is underestimating people by default. If you really want to fuck with the weak egoed, provide everything they need to underestimate you.
reply
I swear, I have to read your thoughtful comments over and over to fully digest them.
reply
I'm sorry lol.
Also I wasn't very good at commenting until I was forced to do it a lot on here. If it's something you'd like to try on, I'd casually recommend just starting. Main downside is that writing is time consuming but it does feel less time consuming as you do it more.
I've grown to appreciate writing as a form of async inter-process communication between me and other people ... you can upgrade from a monolith to a micro-service connected to a bunch of other amazing micro-services.
(h/t @plebpoet reframing networking as "interfacing" for me)
reply
I'm sorry lol.
Don't be. It wasn't a complaint, more of a compliment that you make me think, which is good.

Makes sense, it takes practice, like most things. Just gotta find the time.

That would be helpful. Especially on mobile. I like just one button though.
Maybe it can be a long press action. Kind of a power user thing.
reply
I agree on one button. Long press or overflow action could work IMO
reply
Oh yeah! Overflow is another pattern we're using a lot now.
reply
Yea, we should try not to over-user it, but it might make sense here ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Maybe in tech. Try to run a low skill labour driven business for 15 years. If your default isn't expect bare minimum and hope to be pleasantly surprised you will be on the fast track to an early grave.
We can get into a debate about nature v.s nurture, educational opportunities, systemic poverty and all the other factors that may contribute but the chasm between the highly educated/highly productive and the barely employable has never been greater. For me, the overarching theme is decision making. People who end up successful tend to make good decisions or at least learn from the bad ones they make, while people who struggle all their lives tend to do the same dumb shit over and over in all facets of their life (work, home, health wise, financially).
I can't tell you how many times I hired people for jobs and they just never showed up or showed up for a couple days and never returned, without even the courtesy of a phone call. I can't tell you how many times I woke up to a phone call at 2 or 3am in the morning and had to rush somewhere because someone didn't show up, or did show up did half of what they were supposed to do or screwed something up I had to fix.
Not trying to drag down your optimistic outlook. Just sharing my experience.
reply
I can see this being true. We don't disagree. I'm not saying you should invest in randos using this logic. I'm mostly trying to dissuade people from shorting randos who are operating independently.
If someone has something to gain from your estimate of them, you should probably tend toward withholding judgement with a heavy pinch of discounting them.

ᕦ(ò_óˇ) Day 8 of exercising everyday before the saloon opens
Went for a 14km walk today again. I got up at 9AM but the train took a while so I was at the beginning of my walk at 11AM. The saloon opens at 12PM for me so seems like I am testing the boundaries of the streak definition: "exercising before the saloon opens".
I'll have to get up earlier. It's also getting quite late when I get back home. My original idea with the streak was to always be back when the saloon opens!
I mentioned here that I would try to find my way using the sun. That worked quite well! I only got slightly confused when I have seen a highway sign for my destination which pointed in the opposite direction. But I realized I am not a car and thus it's not meant for me.
No pictures today in the name of privacy - also there wasn't anything particular interesting except a bigger hill I thought about capturing for @DarthCoin because of his comment yesterday.
Tomorrow I'll go shooting at 10AM. Have to think if that counts as exercise. Maybe I'll just walk there, too. It's 6km and up a hill - actually, that's quite a big hill, so maybe it's actually not that flat around here? ;)
reply
Crushing it! Keep getting after it!! 💪💪
reply
Great job. That’s a great distance! Keep it up (and 6km uphill counts!)
reply
Just the last kilometer is up a hill. I am just afraid I am starting to make excuses again, lol
I'll just also walk or run back, then I shouldn't feel bad.
reply
You can do it. ‘Excuses will always be there for you. Opportunity won’t.’
reply
wow 14km impressive... few people can walk/hike/run that. I know a guy that after each 1km must stop because he said that is too much for him.
My record in a day straight was 29km over 5 mountains with high levels included and harsh terrain. But that was years ago....
reply
wow 14km impressive... few people can walk/hike/run that.
Thanks! Didn't know that this would be impressive. I also walked that distance yesterday more or less by accident. I didn't think I would make it but then I was back in familiar terrain faster than I expected. Then I knew I could make it, lol. Then I thought, let's do this again tomorrow!
It's tiring at the end but it's still just walking. One step at a time. Sitting on a bench also feels very relieving. I also think the last 2 kilometers when I am in urban area again take up the most time, lol. So much traffic, so easy to get lost. I hate looking at maps.
My record in a day straight was 29km over 5 mountains with high levels included and harsh terrain. But that was years ago....
Interesting! In flat terrain, that would already probably take around 8 hours. Can't imagine how long it would take over mountainous terrain ... you still remember?
My walks have been quite flat so far but I really start to like these long walks. I really get a feeling for how much I can walk and what my "action radius" is.
I want to find out how much is too much for me in the next weeks. I am basically doing calisthenics, running and then 2x long walk so far.
reply
Can't imagine how long it would take over mountainous terrain ... you still remember?
Started at 8AM and end up at 22PM, with backpacks and stuff, with my 14 yrs daughter. Was a harsh hike but we had to do it in one day, otherwise were losing the last bus to take us home. The highest peak was 3000m in that hike.
Indeed 14km on flat is easy, you don't even realize when you are done.

I don‘t think we should separate things between personal and work, public and private is better.
reply
are you working on a new "hit piece" meta post on SN? 😂😂
reply
no, not yet; I'm writing my yearly reflections 🫣 and most of them are public haha.
reply
hmmm personal = private work = public
When you go to work, you wear clothes/hat for that work, right? When you come home, you leave that "hat" at the entrance and you change your clothes with something else, right?
Just think about that.
reply
I think it would depend on the work, what if some people's work is based on their personal life experience?
reply
If that work is related with other public people, then is public. If that work is let's say, in your garden, growing vegetables, then you are doing it in private capacity. Only when you go with those vegetables to the market, then is in a public capacity.
Is not my damn business what are you doing in your garden, but when you come to the market and we try to have a contract/agreement/trade, you are acting in public capacity.
reply
so you agree on this?
I don‘t think we should separate things between personal and work, public and private is better.
Because work could be either private or public, the same goes for personal things, eg so many people share their personal life online, and those ended up being public.
reply
In some way yes. You are right work could public and private.

@nemo we bumped max animation frames from 100 to 2000
there is also a max resolution for all frames which is 200 megapixels
if the GIFs are longer than that, they will still get cut-off since we can't tell currently if it was cut-off or not
but you should be able to load the original url now in fullscreen mode in any case (the ... in the top left corner)
reply

reply
Yes, 100 are the maximum frames we have configured for our proxy initially. Since gifs are 20-30fps iirc, that gives you about 3-5 seconds.
We will have to up that
Edit: I also didn't think it would just cut off the GIF. I thought it would fail processing and fallback to the original url (with requiring a click if configured in the privacy settings)
Thanks for bringing this back into my awareness. I'll make sure this works properly in my current iteration on our image proxy.

@k00b - another proposal. Take it or leave it. Just my 2 sats.
I suggest that all comments in the Saloon will not be counted for each stacker into the main daily reward piece of pizza that will receive. We are 90% shitposting, not real thing. Yes sometimes are good posts in the Saloon, those maybe we can select them as "best comment of the day or something".

I think you are trying to say that comments in the saloon are zapped too much by people, right?

IMO the rewards pool should be an incentive mechanism for quality / intelligent posts. This is unlikely to emerge from the saloon as it's a hub for general chitchat / shitposting.
In the event that someone has something worthwhile to say, they can take it outside the saloon if they want to be compensated appropriately.
I get that "quality" is somewhat subjective, but I think it's also quite obvious that the saloon is different from other threads and perhaps should not be treated the same when it comes to rewards.
I say all that as a regular poster here who has gamed the rewards system more than most. I don't want that personally so I recycle it all back into the rewards pool. But I'd rather not have to.

I think strict adherence limits creativity and is so stupid anyway. I never saw myself in the role of haiku police! I can't help it. I'm in the habit of counting syllables every time I see your daily haiku. Maybe I'm just preparing you for the day when your editors hound you before publication of "The Collected Poems Of Carlos Fandango" thirty years from now.

I really appreciate you taking the time - thank you - I do check these things as the adherence to the rule actually helps me write. If there were to be haiku police you should definitely be the Commissioner as I consider you knowledgable and encouraging yet firm.
