When you visit someones profile on x the posts are not shown chronological order so the first post, the ones at the top, are months or years old which makes it seem like the user is no longer active. This is bad for the user in question, and the person browsing, and the platform as well i would argue.

Vitalik , Hayden, and Justin Drake were walking one day when they noticed a $100 bill on the sidewalk. Vitalik picked it up and said, “we should use this to build public goods and core infrastructure.” Hayden nodded his head, “agreed, we can put this money to good use.”

Justin Drake smiled and asked Vitalik for the bill. Vitalik obliged. “See that homeless man down there,” he gestured roughly 50 yards down the sidewalk to a homeless man with a sign and a little hat with a few dollar bills and some change in it, “watch this.”

They walked over and Justin appeared as though he was going to give the man the money but instead pulled out a lighter and lit the $100 bill on fire. The homeless man looked confused, as did Hayden and Vitalik. Justin pointed at the hat with the small bills, “that money right there is now more scarce, because I took $100 out of the total circulating supply.” The homeless man still looked perplexed. “Why couldn’t I just have the money, if you were going to burn it?”

“Well,” Justin paused, “it was never yours to begin with.” The homeless man smiled and responded, “that actually makes a lot of sense, thank you for making the money I do have more valuable.”

Vitalik clapped but in a weird way, he put his elbows together and sort of slapped his hands back and forth.

Anyways the homeless man later died of starvation.

Someone recently posed a challenge to me of removing notifications all together. They are fed up with notification abuse on mainstream platforms.

It's an interesting challenge. It would be so nice to delete the notification bell all together and not replace it with anything.

It gave me some interesting ideas, but pulling it off is no small task.

I feel like this is related to this "zero inbox approach": If notifications are just items that show up in the same feed as posts, you could just mark them as read like posts by swiping. Like in inboxes.

btw, some kind of "mark as read" feature would also be useful for push notifications. Currently, there is no connection between the notification bell icon and push notifications. The bell doesn't know that you've already read the notification on your phone.

Yes I agree! I was too lazy to find that post but it also made me think of that.

I am biased but I would prioritise LATAM. Paraguay residency can cost as little as $5k in a bank and your money goes far there. Uruguay, where I am, is super stable but as expensive as Europe currently to live. Next door is Argentina where you can live like a king on $2k a month. Same as Colombia, which has really got its act together. Some of the warmest people live there, on modest salaries. A great place to do business. Don’t let the stigma fool you. It’s a little thing, but there’s still a huge influence of meat on the culture here.

Many countries in the region offer ‘digital nomad’ visas, but I would try and find a path to a more permanent stay beyond the regular 2 years they offer. If you can. Best thing is to hop around and see what feels right… take a trip and come back to regroup. Don’t try and do everything from a far. Invest a few weeks to get a feel for the place.

Buenos Aires was such a colossal PITA when I lived there twenty years ago -- getting basic services for your apartment (e.g., getting internet set up) took an ungodly amount of time -- corruption + bad infrastructure + economic freefall made everything friction-full.

Any idea if it's better now, at least in regard to that stuff?

I don’t watch rugby anymore, but when I was a kid I remember the way the Argentinian kickers used to make a mound out of sand with their hands, instead of just using a plastic thing for putting the ball on.

It showed a kind humble passion that I still remember. I sometimes think a good dose of hyperinflation could actually do good things here in New Zealand to humble people and get rid of the blind adoration for big government and materialism, especially with regards to housing.

For sure. Remarkable place. I always described it as "Post-apocalyptic New York" and think there's a lot of truth to that. A city where people were trying to make up for economic hardship by teaching Latin and Ancient Greek. Incredible amount of education and culture. I'd move back in a second if family circumstances permitted it.

Nice resource. I would say however that only fools pay the ‘expected’ taxes in Colombia. Everyone underreports and has ways of navigating it, for businesses or houses. 95% of the businesses are off the books and informal, unregistered. It’s even better outside the main cities.

An informal economy and people are prepared to ’interpret’ the rules, is what you want. It’s not ideal, but it’s robust and maleable to the politics of government. They’ve had their civil war and are stronger for it. Just like El Salvador, I see a great future for Colombia. Their currency will strengthen/double against the dollar this decade IMHO. They have had a bit of a drag, because of the Venezuelan immigration but hopefully their brothers are through the worst of their troubles now.

I just see their currency has been in an upward wedge for the past 15 years. And despite having Petro in charge who many feared would make COP the next Bolivar… it’s now starting to show signs of strengthening. With all their oil reserves, fertile lands and markets now valuing those resources, 5100/1 may well have been the peak. Pero quién sabe

Escaped? They were going to kick me out due to my unconvincing accent, poor quality moustache and inability to sleep in the afternoon.

Depends why you want to do it… Digital nomad status is a difficult way of life and my advice is find a community of likeminded people overseas doing the same / similar and ask. And you can try it in the US before going overseas - even a different city / part of the US may provide what you are looking for.

Just don’t become one of those white label Amazon shippers hanging around Thailand doing CrossFit, shagging each other and vlogging about how great they are living on $5 a day. They don’t add value to the world they just sell cheap 5hite on behalf of the Chinese. We should aspire to be better than that.

Hey folks, thanks to everyone who came out for part 2 of the Broken Money book club. As before, I tried to trickle new prompts throughout the day, but unlike before, I had a fairly aggressive work travel schedule going on, so a few things appeared in a cluster at the end.

Point is, if you popped in early, feel free to pop in again, there will be new stuff there. And some of the folks in the threads will still respond to new discussion. I certainly will.

I appreciate very much having a place to do this. I'm also excited to see other book-related discussion -- @davidw put a lot of work into a review of The Market for Liberty which I just saw this morning and which I'm excited to check out!

It will take a while to get through Broken Money at the pace we're going -- a few months, assuming people continue to care enough to show up to it. I don't have plans after that, though I expect I'll have a lot of insights from the experience and will have some new ideas.

You probably knew this, but just in case any reader doesn't: I have no formal existence as the SN Book Club Guy or any such thing -- I just thought this book was worthy of a deep exploration and SN might be a good place to do it. Anyone who is similarly moved can just jump in and seize the day.

The only advice I'd have for anyone is that it's actually a fair amount of work, so you might want to put up a test balloon (by posting, soliciting in the Saloon, etc.) to see if there's an appetite for your book given what's going on. Stackers are busy, so some of them might not have the time. But they're also very generous (thanks again to two especially generous stackers!) so you never know :)

You should totally grab the book -- I very consciously set an extraordinarily modest pace, partly for purely selfish reasons (I read very slowly) and partly to be maximally friendly for busy people.

This week (and going forward) I also tried to make it friendlier to people who haven't read the book, but care about the issues and want to discuss them. It's a fine line to walk, obviously, but I think there's enough context for people who haven't read the book to make sense of. So don't let it stop you if you haven't read it!

As a fellow slow reader, I appreciate the pace. I also really appreciate all the effort you put into the discussion prompts merely as a thinking-enjoyeerrr.

I wouldn't be immediately setting aside the time to read the book were it not for the book club. Also

the book is much much better than I imagined
the discussion makes the book far more alive for me than simply reading the text

"Public Sector" in general, "Public School", in particular Should just be "the state" and "state child propaganda centers", respectively

I don't even think "government" is right, because that conflates private governance with the state. The appropriate term is simply "the state".

Bitcoin is know by most of the people in Turkey. One of the biggest exchanges are in Turkey: BTCTurk Bitci etc.

Turkey is one of the biggest economies in the World. We are in G20. But, economic conditions are not stabil due to corruptions. Thus people are interested in crypto money.

One of the most interesting things I have learned is that the way things used to work in Turkey is so decentralized - Turks like to get things done from the people they trust instead of from big brands, which at least was still the norm for the last generation.

Just went back to one of my "secret" restaurants and found out it became a michelin; I feel a bit "annoyed", because now I need to pay extra for the same thing, and it's more crowded and noisy.!

Discovering those undervalued ones before the masses come is more fun, almost feels like zapping the new content before it gets popular in SN.
