Learning just for the sake of learning.
Another common trap for people (me) to fall into is thinking they're making progress by accumulating knowledge, when in reality, that's all they're doing.
There's no action driving the learning.
Aside from my SN consumption, if I'm learning something now, I try to ensure it's actionable. It's information I can put towards something.
Now this isn't to say that all information outside the scope of your personal goals isn't relevant, it's just that it becomes dangerous when you try to replace creation with consumption entirely.
How do you try to find a balance of the two?
What are you not wasting your time with anymore?

Yes, I only learn things that can solve my own problems now, focusing from within.
I stopped traveling from countries to countries, it might look cool from the outside, but keep traveling for the sake of traveling is a waste of time at the end of the days, because it's only consuming; Now I only go to places that can get me closer to certain knowledge&skills I want to learn or meet the people I care about.

I also think how you travel changes this a lot. When I hear people talk about how they've traveled the world it sounds impressive, but you drill down and all they've done is sit on planes and essentially teleport to different places.
Travel long journeys by car, or even better bicycle or by foot, and it's a whole lot more fulfilling. You see and experience things so differently because you're actually putting the work into travel.
Your method of moving becomes productive, engaging, problem solving. You're using your body and mind.
Flying isn't so much travel, as it it continuous arrival.

As @Natalia says depends if you are enjoying the culture and gaining insight or just imposing yourself and your own culture. Seeing without excessive intervention perhaps?

Definitely agree on the traveling thing. A month is my limit now. Once I've hit that, I start thinking I should be working on a project, fixing something - anything but just consuming.
And lots of travel is just consuming, just parading things in front of my eyeballs that are cool, yes, but there's a limit to how long I want to do it.
Having good conversations with new people can help a lot in terms of making travel feel productive and engaging. That can be hard to find, though.

One thing I've done in the past is begin reading fiction when I find I've stopped reading nonfiction. It tends to reenergize me to read more nonfiction.
Most people enforce balance with inelastic rules. When Bezos would say "work-life harmony" I think that's what he was getting at. Harmony is balance but a dynamic kind of balance.
Trying to change other people's minds.
Earnest arguing is an exhausting expression of compassion. When I find myself arguing these days, it's when:
- I think the person's point of view/behavior is hurting them
- The person is worthy of compassion

I like what you say about dynamic balance. It reminds me somehow of what I learnt in high school chemistry classes: static equilibrium. Except that static equilibrium is the opposite of dynamic balance ofc

Very good insight about arguing. If you can recognize this in the moment it's much easier to catch yourself and reorient to a much healthier discussion

Often excessive learning seems to be down to a lack of confidence or procrastination. ‘Will this qualification or course allow me to create more value?’ should always inform a decision to undertake more training and it should always be progressive with that in mind.
Relearning the theory of how to skydive may benefit those who need a refresher… and the learning how to do flips before doing any actual jumps may be something to aspire to but really you have to step out the plane door at some point….
Personally I’m not wasting time with petty complainers. Misery always seeks company and occasional low mood is acceptable…. moaning without any clear action or acknowledgment of the situation and you get the boot.

Stop attacking me, thought this was a safe space!
In all seriousness I love learning things just because knowing is fun. But it also cripples my ability to take action, or at least I think. While studying the last 3 years I worked in a tighter group of peers, and one which I just loved working with most often said to me "Stop thinking and just do", something which I try to do more hehe.
I can analyze things and look around for the top three ways to attack a problem, gather semi shallow knowledge around it and first after take action. This is hindering to some extent. Following his advice was to simply fuck around and find out if it was good - which in some ways taught me even more and faster since I had practical knowledge now.
And at least for me, more practical knowledge trumps more theoretical knowledge. In terms of moving the needle.

People who are untrue to themselves.
In the past, I would be an empath and think that perhaps people are deluding themselves because they are still plagued by some kind of trauma. I would try to be by their side and support and encourage them, gently prodding them to be honest with themselves (and me). But these days, age is catching up with me and I find that I just cannot take such bullshit anymore

Video games. Great dopamine for “achieving” something but largely a false sense of accomplishment. Kiddo coming to the age for video games though so hope to leverage them for bonding time with Mario kart and other fun competitive/collaborative games. Ultimate goal is Factorio with the kiddos but can’t force it. Have to lead them gently to enjoying it. Hehe

This is a good one. I've certainly sunk a lot of time into that activity, and I have the degrees to prove it, but you're right about how it's not really progress unless it leads to something.
If you just love learning random stuff, then it's a perfectly fine hobby. Plus, you might be able to leverage that in the future in ways that weren't foreseeable at the time.
Another thing I just quit doing is watching corporate news. As with your example, the feeling of being informed is almost entirely an illusion.

You're wasting time when you think you do, that's my view.
I tend to experiment to an extreme level on many things, yet I don't see this as wasting time.
It might happen that people would see your personal achievements as wasteful, but if you listen to everyone who thinks that then you're having your life decided by others.
If you want to learn, just do it, if you think it's wasteful that's ok, but I think knowledge is never a waste, in any form.
