Has anyone ever split wood? My neighbors do it a lot. It looks to be pretty intensive labor. I'm spoiled. I have always bought mine cut and split. The extra fee always seemed reasonable. But, now there's a lot of free firewood around if you do your own splitting.
you mean this?
not splitted by me, but I'm proud to announce that I've learned how to lift the fire three days ago.! taking baby steps to learn how to live a natural life. ๐ and it's so nice that you can brew tea on top of it.

Its strange how a small flame like that will consume that entire container filled with all those flammable material. I guess anything is possible.
reply
I can't be sure from the photo, but it would seem to be a challenge to split wood with that blade. Also, how is it fastened to the handle?
reply
I dunno neither, but locals here do it this way.๐

Looks like they should be storming a medieval castle with that!

Different ways to approach it: Airbnb, local rental sites, but the best way is knowing local friends and then ask if they know someone or something - yes, this is how things are being done in Turkey.!
A bit crazy at first, but having รงay with people is one of the great problem-solving hacks ๐

Only when braaiing, which is another word for barbequing. You must have a sharp axe, otherwise it will definitely become intensive labor.

who knows... knows.

When I lived with my grandfather, we had a small kitchen house heated by a wood stove. Once he got to his 80s I started taking over chopping wood in the winter. He was a veteran from WWII, Darby's Rangers 1st Ranger Battalion. Hard to tell someone from his generation to go sit down and let someone else do the hard work.
reply
I think the older generation was built differently compared to the lazy asses of today. Social media and to be fair, the internet has completely f**** the youth of today. Majority have been consumed with shitty trends that has no real world benefits. I'm glad platforms like SN exists at least. The only places on the internet with sane people.

He was of a tougher generation.

The "Greatest" apparently. What a time to be alive back then. Was going to post a fun fact here but I'll put it in the Fun Fact Friday.

Meditative exercise with a survival use case. Awesome!

Imagine not know how to chop wood when you're stranded on an island. That would be really bad. I've been watching these survival videos where someone goes to an island and stays there for a few days. I've learned how to start a fire without matches. I guess I'm ready for the zombie apocalypse now. Lol.
reply
Yes, I do that almost every week.
Is fun, a lot of exercise, no need to go to gym, keeps you healthy and in good shape.
You need a good ax and ... no fear. Confidence in your hands and muscles.
I get wood in big pieces from near by source (a lot of forest to cleanup around and is free).
So each few days I am cutting and splitting woods in small pieces for my fireplace.
Few 1-2h / day is more than enough.
reply
Maybe @orthwyrm should include this in his daily exercise routine. For every 10 push up, you have to crop up one piece of wood.
reply
I'd probably have to do it somewhere else. Don't think I can chop wood in a disabled toilet.
reply
Lmao. That got me cracking.
reply
People around here have these splitter devices, but my brothers in law use your method.
reply
I prefer to use my bare hands.
Cap knows what I'm talking about. Lol.

LOL no, not really like that ๐๐๐ that's insane, but funny.
reply
Lol. You should try it.
Its a good workout.
reply
I have an electric splitter too, but that one is only for hard vines wood, that is really hard to split manually.
Is more enjoyable with the ax, especially when is a sunny day, half naked in the sun, taking a sun bath and making exercise. Is really good for your health, you are expelling all the toxins from your body in just 1h.
reply
@darthcoin half naked in the sun, an ax and with a beer in both hand, wild.

Many ways to go about it, all pretty dangerous if you're not concentrating. But then what would life be if there was no risk? In any case it is your own risk, in your own hands, a little like that thrill of the "has it worked" before your transaction shows up in its destination wallet. Whatever it is you're doing - don't rush.

Sounds like you need to invest in a hydraulic attachment that you stick on the front of a forklift ๐

Yeah. Great exercise. Easy to hurt yourself in multiple ways. Work up to it is my advice.
reply
I think I'll try the middle ground with some sort of device. Me going out there with an axe has disaster written all over it.
reply
Good idea. You'd be missed around here.

You are a true renaissance man. I never anticipated I would get this much good info about splitting wood in the SN Saloon!
reply
There's not a cowboy alive that doesn't know how to split wood. Whether its with a axe, saw, chain saw, or bare hands, sn cowboys are built differently. We are what you would call, apex predators.
