Has anyone started marketing individual territories outside of Stacker News? This seems like a good way to foster bitcoin adoption, while also increasing activity in your territory. Here's an example of my thoughts: There is a chess forum on Stacker News. The owner can make an announcement on different chess forums and sites throughout the world. They can pitch it as a way to earn bitcoin while interacting with other chess players. Then they can pitch bitcoin. Maybe include a simple statement about bitcoin, with links to a good beginner education site. I'm just thinking out loud. I plan on doing this soon. Are any other territory owners already marketing?
No I am waiting for the wild west phase to simmer down but your chess forum example is the precise reason I wanted a sports sub. There are so many sports forums, sports discussion on social media that could be potentially targeted.
I know @kr was working on some marketing stuff recently that he was asking for feedback on. Would also like to see where that goes and ensure there is synergy between the way I would be marketing the sports territory and SN is marketing the broader site.

the beautiful thing about territories from a marketing standpoint is that owners have a lot of freedom to experiment with new marketing ideas without needing permission, and i suspect SN will learn a lot about how to reach new stackers from this.
if 100 territory owners take their own unique marketing approaches, maybe a handful will see meaningful success, but those lessons can then be passed along to all other stackers and territory owners.
in a way, it’s kind of like crowd-sourcing marketing ideas where anyone can see what works and learn from it.
reply
Agreed on the marketing approaches but would also think SN needs branding consistency.

I think this will get unlocked 10x when there's a bigger moderation parameter space, and different territories can really be different in a functional way. Will be interesting to see.

How would you know if you had success in a marketing campaign?
reply
The possibilities are endless for you. I think sub territories will probably be a thing at some point, right? All the major sports and a bunch of minor ones. Different pools, etc. You can keep busy the rest of your life.

Yes @k00b mentioned eventually territory founders will be able to sell sub territories and sub sub territories and I would imagine retain some of the revenue those entities earn.
I hope they don't move too quickly on that. Making the territories profitable for founders shouldn't be the priority. I think if founders are looking at the big picture the potential growth and development of territories and SN more broadly is more important than covering the 100k sats a month. My hope is the rewards I earn by being active on SN each month will cover most of the cost of maintaining the territory. Territory revenue being a small part of that.
Let's see if we can round up a few other territory founders next week and we will takeover meta again and have a meeting of the minds. I would be interested in seeing how other founders are approaching this, what their expectations are, plans, how they will market it, do they want SN brand consistent marketing that all territories can use (like a customizable territory referral link for instance), or do people want to create their own marketing/branding. I think a lot of sub reddits have their own marketing (thinking of stuff like wall street bets) but reddit is much more established with a huge user base. Personally, I almost think SN needs to be the primary focus. Thinking of it as the "Town", while territories are places to visit when you come to "Town". Whereas the reddit subs are like towns of their own in a large state. Eventually hopefully SN grows into a state (not the state-haha) and our territories grow into towns but we are in the infant stage right now.

I like your vision a lot. I am also not expecting or counting on my territories breaking even anytime soon. I know you have promotion experience, so I'm going to lean on you for advice in this endeavor. Maybe we all should.

I honestly don't have a lot of experience with marketing, promotion in the digital realm. My business had a website and did email marketing, social media marketing (google ads, facebook etc) and the guy that designed and maintained our website was supposed to do be doing SEO but quite honestly he was expensive and useless.
Most of our business came from networking, existing customers, word of mouth. We were never really successful online. So while I have some ideas, I am also keen to learn from others who maybe have done a bit more in the digital realm than I have.

I didn't market it myself outside of SN. Someone at @Alby just found out about ~oracle by themselves and then DMed me to say they are watching ~oracle closely and the prediction market that I am building. The most funny part was that they were making the exact same kind of joke that I am using. I predict... X.
That's when I realized I am really not alone with my dedication and interest in PMs on lightning, lol
So not sure if this counts as me trying to do marketing myself outside SN?
But I definitely know what you mean. The idea to play chess against @needcreations_ and stream it while creating a PM is definitely an idea that is related to marketing for me. It's just an too obvious simple use case to make streams more interesting and demonstrate to everyone that PMs are here to stay and I'm serious. I just couldn't not bring up this idea, lol
I predict that PMs are going to blow up this cycle.

Yours seems to me to be a special case. I mean, you built something that is in some respects unique. I'm guessing you won't need to market much. People will be coming to you. Seriously, that's some damn good work you did.

Thanks, I sure hope people see how much work I put into it even though it still is shit since it's just a MVP for now, lol
I am also very sorry that I literally just felt like I had to do this and thus basically disappeared from SN for a week as @k00b mentioned on SNL last week.
But building this thing and seeing it coming alive slowly but surely is truly something special to see in my life, lol
Next to working at SN of course :)

It was WELL worth the time and effort, and I never use caps.:)

Take all the sats this freebie has :)

It's a good idea. I had been meaning to start doing that at Minds. I'm in several groups there that overlap in interests with some of the territories.
Part of my reluctance is that the community at SN is so much better that I'm not super eager to contaminate it.

I know what you mean. It would be terrible to ruin what we have. I think the bitcoin sub will always be the best place to hang out. It might even get better as all the peripheral stuff disappears- just solid bitcoin signal. Also, things will improve when you need to subscribe to individual territories. You're on minds? I was on there for a while. Haven't logged in for a few years. I guess they integrated with nostr?
reply
I've been much less active on there since discovering Stacker News, but I still check in a couple of times a week. I usually have news clips on in the background while I work and if they're interesting I share them on Minds where there's a bit more interest than there is here.
The nostr integration doesn't seem to work yet or at least no one I know figured out how to do it.
It's dramatically inferior to Stacker News, but there are a lot more people on it and a subset of them are pretty thoughtful.

I started telling some people about it, including a gift sats bonus with a custom invite link but hit a big with invites where they don’t get credited or gifted. Waiting to promote until that’s fixed. Been too busy to investigate deep into the issue…

Great post! I posted an announcement on NOSTR, but I e been thinking about this for sure!
