We should start giving extra rewards to great comments posted earlier to a thread. It takes extra effort to add the first thoughtful comment to a post.
reply
I've informally started doing a thing where, whenever I zap a post with no comments, I leave one. The logic is that if there's a comment, maybe someone will pay more attention to the post, which I zapped because I think it's worthy of attention. I try to be thoughtful, bc what's the point otherwise? but if it were explicitly incentivized (vs implicitly) I worry that there might be an avalanche of worthless "first!" comments. So you'd wind up doing more harm than good.
This is what always stops me when I get uppity about wanting some reward for link posts that have textual descriptions.

I think it is a good idea. In some way it already happens with the comments being zapped more if they are good and early because they may get more views. A top comment after a day or two may not be viewed much so it gets less zaps even if the comment is great too.

Good point! Maybe just changing the placeholder to "early thoughtful comments get more zaps" is enough.

Hey @ekzyis I dove head first into YNAB last night and my head is spinning haha. But I will keep on trucking. Thinking maybe I might do the year sub to give it an honest go for a year.
reply

Nice!
Yeah, the start is rough. It is something you need to get used to and in the beginning, you might not really see the benefits in the future clearly so it's easy to lose motivation.
But I guess you already looked through their stuff like The Four Rules and already know what I mean with "rough start" and "benefits in the future" :)
However, I don't really follow Rule 4: Age Your Money since YNAB sees me buying bitcoin as spending my money, haha
I had a free year sub as a student and that's when I got hooked. I think YNAB is indeed my first SaaS that I am willing to pay for. But you can track when your YNAB payment is due also within YNAB! :)
this sounds more and more like I get paid to promote YNAB here, lol

Day 17 of posting mining earnings from the day before: 758 sats on 3Jan2024! Running total: 14,000 sats!
reply
Do the profits pay for the costs? Or are you just mining for ideology?
reply
I am definitely losing money on it right now, based on the current fiat value of sats compared to my initial investment + operating costs (electricity).
I haven't done the math, but there's a certain fiat value where this will be a profitable operation.
The other perspective is that I am paying a premium for KYC-free sats. So it just depends on how you look at things.

In my opinion language is overrated. I mean speaking? And it would be cool with a "no talk" month. Sort like "No Talk July". And nobody talked for a whole month?
reply
Not speaking or not using language is not the same as not communicating. So its not a suggestion to be quiet.
reply
I once did a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat. No talking, or any other activity really besides eating. Interesting experience.
reply
I am so tempted to try this.
But I am afraid it will kill me or I would go mad.

You should. TBH I did not find it too useful, but I know others who claim they get great value out of these things.

Thanks to a 25k boosted post yesterday (of which 50% is shared), it’s been decent enough.
Haven’t found a way to tally up the rewards, not sure there’s a view yet, but if I was to hazard a guess, probably at 40-50k sats for the month vs 100k outlay.
reply
Tell a lie LOL, just tallied-up all notifications. ~privacy generated 18.5k sats, of which 12.5k came yesterday from the boosted post. Me needs to drum-up some more engagement.

Damn, I better start writing some good posts so I don't have to deposit funds because of my Zap to Zero experiment, lol
Maybe I should do a Zap to FIRE experiment.

Your territories should be part of your SN compensation package. I will be your agent when you sign your next contract.

You mean my account should be special and exempt from paying for territories?
We actually discussed internally how it makes sense that at least one engineer gets some experience with making a territory profitable (dogfooding) since ~bitcoin, ~tech, ~nostr and ~meta as the OG territories basically run themselves now.
reply
Or you get credited back the sats you do pay.
reply

Wow! How do you deal to moderating x3 territories? Are you planning to keep them all? For how long?
reply
60 sats \ 2 replies \ @ek 4 Jan
What do you mean exactly with moderating?
For me, it's more a time problem to post interesting stuff there. I do have idea for interesting posts.
And to "moderate" ~crypto, I simply raised posting costs to 256 sats and every post that is not OT gets the posting costs refunded by me (+ additional sats, depending on how much I liked the post). And looking through recent, I would say this approach has potential. People posting OT are funding the territory while every other post gets to stand out from the OT stuff at the same time.
I also updated the territory description but I think @grayruby is right. No one looks at the territory description as it is.
Another factor is that I like all three territories. That's why I founded them in the first place. They are like children to me, lol:
how can you handle so many territories? 🤔
I like all three of them! They are like children for me. But ~oracle is my firstborn. Maybe that means something.
Are you planning to keep them all? For how long?
I am planning to keep them forever or until I find someone better than me for them.

Yes they are! Well, we are planning to use an online service for print, something like painful but better + with a global provider that craft eco-friendly t-shirts and locations all over the world (we are focusing only in one product for now).
And guess what! YES, we will definitely accept bitcoin only!
The question is more for @SN team here... the designs will be featuring the ~AGORA and wondering if we could use SN logo somewhere?

Good morning gang!! It's Thursday and for me it's back to work, so it's going to be a tough getting back on track since I'm still groggy but nothing like a nice hot cup of coffee can fix, the holidays were amazing but it's nice to get back in the routine of work, see my students again and get things done, I wish you all an incredible day, may it be filled with success, love and productivity. We've got this gang, I believe in you and you're important and what you do matters, so kick bum and show this week who's boss. As always, be well and stay frosty my good friend!!

I am bullish on mining but no particular company, so figure I'd simply go with the current leaders (might add HUT8).
This does not always work out (I got burned by Core Scientific last year), but my bet is that the bear market is probably over and no other major players are likely to be flushed out.
