There are some interesting trends i’ve observed about the dynamic between discussions, links posts, and comments on SN, and figured I’d share them in a post.

#1

98% of the top 50 posts by comments this month are for discussion posts
The number of comments doesn’t directly affect rewards but is one factor that influences the ranking and visibility of a post
84% of the top 50 posts by zaprank and 86% of the top 50 posts by sats are also discussion posts
in these calculations, i’m grouping bounties and polls into the “discussion post” category

#2

Roughly 50% of posts are discussion posts these days, up from 10-20% in the early days of SN
It seems like the community is collectively nudging creators towards creating posts that prompt discussions rather than pure news updates

#3

There seems to be a threshold on all posts, where after there are 2-3 comments the barriers for community participation are much lower
Great posts often get lots of sats before they get any comments, it usually takes a couple of starter comments before a wave of back-and-forth discussion ensues
Early comments also get better visibility than later ones, and if they’re interesting it stands to reason they’ll get more sats too

#4

The top-ranked comments on SN skew towards being quite long.
In one sense, it’s a good thing that what appear to be thoughtful, detailed comments are being read and appreciated. However, I’m not sure length of a comment is always a good proxy for quality in the long run
Any other interesting SN trends you’re noticing?
Gut reaction to #1 and #2 is that it's annoying to click off-site.
When a link post also includes a long quote (or the complete text) from the linked-to source, I'm WAY more likely to read it/engage with it.
I realize not all links are just an article or text, but most of them are and if you click on the link, it's pretty difficult mentally to come back and write a comment or something.

good point. this is something i didn’t recognize for the longest time… i’ve just started adding more context to the link posts i share.
a part of me still wants to race to post a new link when i see a good one, glad the 10 minute edit window exists to go back and add more context after posting

Definitely noticed this also. Proof of work in motion.
More comments (about 20-40% extra) on posts if posted before 1pm EST too.
I planned to release my analytics post, diving deeper into other related trends. The content & stats will need updating since I last ran the numbers, but will aim to get that out sometime in the next 7 days.
May be some fun stats on territories and author awards also.

I thought you were recording 😏
I agree, PoW in motion for sure. I’m more inclined to respond to a discussion than a link post

Me, also noticed that posts maded afternoon in my timezone (UTC+2) have more activity

good point, mornings (EST) do tend to get more engagement, i suspect SN is a daily habit for a lot of people and they know to check for new stuff when they get to their office or start their day
looking forward to your analytics post!

It could be great to be visible a "leaderboard" / ranking of top members (based on their posts / comments). For exemple to be available a daily / weekly / monthly leaderboard

there is a leaderboard of stackers here: https://stacker.news/top/stackers/month

Bitcoin territory hit by 51% attack !?

do you feel like the balance of content on SN has shifted too far away from Bitcoin?
reply
I'm not sure because it's not possible to see those numbers. I said it as a joke, but my perception is that the others grew well in terms of territories. I don't know if it's more than 51% :)

took a quick glance at the top posts of the month and looks like 10 of the top 21 posts were for stacker generated territories, so you might not be too far off with the 51% number
reply
I wonder if the introduction of territories has somehow altered the trend?

the % of posts that are discussion posts has been steadily growing (nearly a straight line) for the last 2 years, still too early to see any territory effects there
territories could be playing a role in changing the quality of comments though

It would be great to see detailed statistics about each territory, or maybe the influence of each one with respect to the others, as a user it would be nice to know how the territory you are accessing stands out, for example... in territory1 users post 87% more, in territory2 there are 10 times more comments, and so on.... thanks!

good idea, there could definitely be a dashboard page that lays out all this info in a useful format
reply
This option would also be especially useful for potential territory owners as they would have multiple data to analyze strategies before launching a new territory

I feel like I've done a lot of king-making on the top-rated comments. You should run this in February and see what it looks like then.

I appreciate the research. It's very interesting.
I think it's a shame that link posts became the type most used by spammers, and thus most ignored by the community, because it is a valuable tool for sharing interesting news items or articles. I've started doing more of them recently, but with a decent amount of added context.

yup, links definitely serve a purpose but augmenting them with added context is a superpower for engagement
reply
I think adding context is a good practice for link posts, but stackers (including myself) have gotten into the habit of scrolling right past links.

My post (#387781) with my thoughts on link only posts. Tl:Dr less likely to engage
reply
We have certainly been incinitivized to write longer, more thoughtful posts. #4 seems quite evident, to me

I've been noticing the lack of actionable/practical hacks and tricks, like good practices that you found after many trials and errors - coming up with good practices that already show many POWs behind.
And nothing wrong with all the discussions, but I want to see more real actions that can improve life, not just talkings. 😳
